More than a third of people from the East Midlands who went abroad on holiday in the last 12 months did not have the correct insurance or any at all, ABTA has revealed. The travel association said that 39 per cent of people from the region who travelled overseas didn't have protection for their personal circumstances or activities they took part in while away. Over the past year, 15 per cent of people reported travelling on some holidays completely uninsured, while 24 per cent risked invalidating their insurance by not telling their insurance companies about pre-existing medical conditions or by taking part in activities without checking they were covered under the policy. An insurer could reject a claim in either of these situations. Mark Tanzer, chief executive of ABTA, said: "Every year we see cases of people falling into difficulty due to travelling without sufficient travel insurance. "While many people are still choosing not to take out travel insurance at all, others are … [Read more...] about Everything you need to know about travel insurance
Travel insurance with pre existing medical conditions
A West Sussex man who was treated for cancer has told of his battle to get travel insurance – after he was quoted more than £4,400 to cover a two-week trip to Mexico. Teacher Tony Gellett, 59, spoke out about the staggering quote after the Financial Conduct Authority challenged the travel insurance industry to do more to help people with pre-existing medical conditions. A regulator has proposed a series of new rules to make travel insurance cheaper for people with pre-existing medical conditions. The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) said it plans to create a new service that will redirect customers to specialist providers to crack down on rip-off premiums. It follows a 12-month investigation that found consumers find it difficult to access the specialist travel insurance market, often overpaying through standard policies as a result. In the UK at least 15 million people are currently living with at least one long-term health condition. This number is predicted to rise to 18 million over the next decade. Macmillan Cancer, a UK charity, said it's received around 900 calls about travel insurance since January alone. The average person with cancer, it said, will pay £133 for their cover - compared to £37 for a typical member of the general public. However, 1% - 7,500 - of Brits will pay £1,000 or more for their policy. "I feel like the … [Read more...] about New rules to make travel insurance cheaper for people with medical conditions
The Government has promised the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) won’t be a casualty of Brexit. But how does the card work – and what pitfalls await the unwary and unprepared? What is an EHIC? The European Health Insurance Card replaced the old E111 certificate in 2005. This free card gives you the right to access state-provided healthcare during a temporary stay in any of the other 27 EU countries, as well as Switzerland and the European Economic Area (EEA) nations of Norway, Iceland and plucky Liechtenstein. Most countries have a health system that is similar to the NHS, except that you may be expected to pay a small proportion of the cost of treatment – for example, to see a GP. You may also have to pay upfront for care, and then claim back when you return home. The NHS provides good online information on the policies and charges in each of the partner countries. Do I still need travel … [Read more...] about European Health Insurance Card: Everything you need to know about EHIC
