Ukraine war: Two children among 19 killed as Russian missiles hit apartment block near Odesa

July 1, 2022 by news.sky.com

Russian missile attacks on residential buildings near Odesa have killed at least 19 people, including two children. The strikes hit the small town of Serhiivka, about 30 miles (50km) southwest of the Ukrainian port city, before dawn on Friday. Pictures show smoke rising from the charred remains of flats as emergency workers search through debris for survivors trapped under the rubble after part of the building collapsed. So far 41 people have been rescued. Moscow insists it only hits military infrastructure, but thousands of civilians have been killed since the war began in February. A Ukrainian army general says Russia is often using inaccurate Soviet missiles, and this is causing significant loss of civilian life. Putin 'may now become more dangerous' - live updates on Ukraine war Another 30 people were injured in the assault, according to Odesa officials. Emmanuel Macron’s ‘grand bargain’ with Germany lies in tatters

July 1, 2022 by www.telegraph.co.uk

Emmanuel Macron’s grand bargain with Germany has unravelled. He no longer has the political credibility to rein in France’s chronic fiscal deficits or to stop the national debt ratcheting further into the danger zone. Five years ago he swept into power as the reformist Wunderkind, touting his book Revolution and vowing to turn France into Europe's start-up nation. It looked as if a French leader might finally take a chainsaw to the 3,000-page code de travail (labour law) and a thicket of 360 separate taxes dating back to feudalism. The core pledge was to restore spending discipline in France after eleven years in breach of the EU’s Stability Pact, again making Paris a fit partner for Berlin in joint management of Europe’s economic system. In recompense — he hoped — Germany would relent on Europe. Berlin would cross the fiscal Rubicon after two decades of foot-dragging. It would accept the need for a permanent EU treasury with tax-raising powers, deemed imperative for the long … [Read more...] about Emmanuel Macron’s ‘grand bargain’ with Germany lies in tatters

Can jobs in Ethiopia keep Eritrean refugees out of Europe?

July 5, 2017 by www.bbc.co.uk

By Emmanuel Igunza Published 5 July 2017 Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Many thousands of Eritreans have fled the country for Europe in search for a better life. A multinational initiative is now trying to stem the flow of migrants to Europe by training refugees and giving them jobs in neighbouring Ethiopia. "I was not sure we would make it across. I am so relieved we are here," says 19-year-old Salama - not his real name. Together with his friend Abiro, they have been walking for two days from Eritrea, without any food or water. At one point, they claim to have been shot at by government soldiers who are stationed along the heavily militarised border between Ethiopia and Eritrea. "The reason for fleeing from our country is because the Eritrean government keeps on forcing us to join the national service and we are wanted in our homeland. "We walked through the … [Read more...] about Can jobs in Ethiopia keep Eritrean refugees out of Europe?
