US President Donald Trump on Friday emphasized his country's past and continued interest in the Asia-Pacific region at a meeting of world leaders anxious about what turn US policy might take under his leadership. "We will be friends, partners and allies for a long time to come," Trump told the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) CEO summit in the Vietnamese city of Da Nang. Trump praised the economic progress made in what he called the "Indo-Pacific" region as "nothing short of miraculous." "I am here to offer renewed friendship with America," Trump said. The term "Indo-Pacific" has been interpreted as an indication of Trump's wish to stress India's importance in the region. Read more: Will Putin and Trump meet at APEC? DURING his presidential campaign Donald Trump declared that pulling out of the Trans-Pacific Partnership would be one of the first things he would do if he took office. On January 23 he was as good as his word and signed an executive order which withdrew the US from the world's largest free trade agreement. Here we examine the TPP and look at why Trump decided to to pull the US out of it.The TPP was designed to be a trade agreement between 12 of the Pacific Rim countries. Now that the US has pulled out those remaining are Australia, Canada, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, Peru, Vietnam, Brunei, Chile, New Zealand and Singapore. When the US was included the nations made up 40 per cent of the world's economy. The deal was signed in February in New Zealand after seven years of negotiations. It would create a trade environment similar to that of the EU's single market. It would aim to "promote economic growth, support the creation and retention of jobs, enhance innovation, productivity … [Read more...] about What is the Trans-Pacific Partnership and why did Donald Trump withdraw from the trade deal?

US President Donald Trump launched his first — semi-official — foray into Asian politics on a Friday in December of last year by having a phone conversation with the president of Taiwan. Then-President-elect Trump's decision to accept the call, the first conversation by an American president or a president-elect with a Taiwanese leader in nearly four decades, made international headlines. Beijing lodged an official complaint. That this early episode from the dawn of the Trump era is nearly forgotten and now seems almost quaint is a sign of how much has happened, and is constantly happening, in a presidency that has been described as the "bully pulpit on steroids." North Korea Arguably the most consequential way he has broken with presidential protocol in regard to Asia is by engaging in an ongoing public feud with North Korea's leader in response to Pyongyang's increasing advances in its nuclear arms capabilities. Trump's messages, mostly via his preferred … [Read more...] about In Asia, Donald Trump must act as US explainer-in-chief
Obamacare: Replacing and repealing Obamacare, former President Barack Obama's signature health care reform officially called the Affordable Care Act, was a top campaign issue for Donald Trump. As important, however, is the fact that the issue has been rallying cry for Republicans long before Trump took to the political stage. Both taken together are a fairly solid indicator that Obamacare in its current form will likely be repealed and replaced by Republicans in Congress. That Donald Trump signed an executive order pertaining to Obamacare on Inauguration Day only underlines the importance of this issue to his administration, even if the order itself, as experts have argued, was rather vague and without any clear impact. While it thus seems highly likely that the Republican-controlled Congress will do away with Obamacare, the entire process could take some time. "They maybe able to come with a legislative package in the first 100 days, but it may take longer than that to figure … [Read more...] about Will President Donald Trump deliver on four key promises?
Opposition to free trade deals This is arguably one of the most stunning developments of the 2016 presidential race: Both presidential candidates have come out in opposition of free trade. Trump and Clinton have vowed that as president they would block the already fully negotiated Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), a large trade agreement hammered out between the US and 11 other nations. This is noteworthy for several reasons. One, because it marks a major policy reversal, as both parties have traditionally supported free trade. The Republican Party has viewed itself for a long time as the champion of free trade. Democrats have generally not been as enthusiastic about trade deals as their Republican counterparts, but have nevertheless pushed through trade deals like the controversial North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) during the presidency of Hillary Clinton's husband, Bill. Two, because Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, in her role as secretary of state, … [Read more...] about Three things Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton agree on
