The former Toys 'R' Us unit in Scunthorpe is set to be brought back to life under plans which could create more than 100 jobs. Proposals have been submitted which would see the building transformed into three seperate retail units. As well as sub-dividing the unit, the application also seeks planning permission for a rear extension into the existing service yard, the installation of a mezzanine floor, alterations to the car park and service yard and associated works and development. It has been submitted by property agent Savills on behalf of investor RPMI Railpen and would see the building brought back into use, having stood empty since March. In the application, the company states it expects 106 full-time jobs to be created by the proposal, with one of the newly sub-divided units to become a food store. Debenhams has become the latest High Street operator to announce a big closure programme, putting thousands of jobs at risk. The woes at Debenhams comes as a raft of retailers including New Look, Carpetright and Mothercare also embark on store closures programmes. A host of factors are hitting the retail sector, which is still the largest employers in the UK private sector with more than 3m employees. The sector also contributes billions to the public purse through VAT and other taxes. But what does the new announcement mean for the North East? What is happening at Debenhams? The chain is proposing to shut 50 of its shops on top of 10 closures already announced this year, with estimates that around 4,000 jobs will be lost.
