‘Miss Mirja, Dear, I’m downloading anti-virus programmes on your computer now. Will you pay by debit or credit card?’ ‘Sorry? Pay for what?’ I asked. ‘It’ll be £200,’ said ‘Eddie’. It was a Wednesday morning and it just dawned on me that I had been on the phone to the ‘Microsoft Help Desk’ for what must have been a good hour. The chap on the other end of the line – ‘Eddie’ – continued to talk to me with this soft voice that was beginning to bother me. I don’t know why my senses only kicked in then. Perhaps the prospect of parting with my money and card details was needed to finally shake me awake. I told ‘Eddie’ no and asked him to get out of my computer. I was almost apologetic – I dared not to be rude. I still can’t quite put my finger on how he managed to con me. Even now, weeks after it happened, I am bewildered as to why I fell for it. I still have no answer. I had never fallen for a scam before and I was absolutely convinced that I never would. The whole … [Read more...] about I thought I was too streetwise to fall for an internet scam – then it happened to me

Meet the Technical Artists Behind Comedy’s Most Impressive Specials
Photo: Netflix It’s natural to skip past the end credits on a comedy special without thinking about the people credited within them. Platforms like Netflix practically encourage this behavior, taking you back to the navigation menu moments after the comedian has finished waving to the crowd. Linger on them for a little longer, however, and you’ll see the hundreds of artists and craftspeople responsible for bringing comedy specials to life. They’re producers who manage hiring and logistics, cinematographers and production designers who marry comedians’ content to their aesthetics, and sound mixers and editors who refine live performances into polished products. To learn more about how these professionals approach their crafts, Vulture interviewed a group of five behind-the-scenes figures who’ve made invaluable contributions to the comedy specials we consider technical achievements today. They’ve lent their expertise to productions like Jerrod Carmichael’s Rothaniel , Bo … [Read more...] about Meet the Technical Artists Behind Comedy’s Most Impressive Specials

Disinformation on the front lines: ‘War is not just bombs and tanks’
Russia's invasion of Ukraine has led to a proliferation of disinformation on social media that is challenging journalists and fact-checkers around the world. Justin Arenstein is the founder and CEO of Africa's largest investigative technology and data journalism initiative, Code for Africa (CfA). We spoke to him about how disinformation strategies being implemented in relation to Ukraine have been used by Russia in Africa for years. DW Akademie: With Code for Africa, an investigative technology and open data initiative on the continent, you have looked into disinformation campaigns. Could you give some background on this and how they are now adapting to the Russian invasion of Ukraine? Justin Arenstein: We at Code for Africa started tracking influence operations designed to subvert the media in 2012, first by criminal cabals like the Guptas and their British strategists involved in ‘state capture’ corruption in places like South Africa. But increasingly, we have also looked … [Read more...] about Disinformation on the front lines: ‘War is not just bombs and tanks’
Wyatt Cenac on His New Album, Kanye, and the Response to His ‘WTF’ Interview
Comedian Wyatt Cenac. Photo: Rebecca Sapp/WireImage Wyatt Cenac is many things — a comedian, a black man, a creature of Brooklyn. If you mention him to a stranger, chances are they’ll be familiar with the name but not fully confident of where they know him from. For better or for worse, the second you say “ Daily Show ” followed by “black guy,” however, the connection is made. For more than four years, Cenac was a writer and correspondent for the Comedy Central staple, leaving in December 2012. While currently hosting the weekly comedy showcase “Night Train” at the venue Littlefield in Gowanus, Cenac has also been touring across the country, doing stand-up. One of those stops was in Madison, Wisconsin, where he recorded Furry Dumb Fighter , his new stand-up album, out today. We caught up at the Exley in Williamsburg to talk about his new project, Black History Month, and why Lionel Richie is black Paul McCartney. In your stand-up, you talk about the name of … [Read more...] about Wyatt Cenac on His New Album, Kanye, and the Response to His ‘WTF’ Interview
The 11 Best Stand-Up Specials of 2014
Photo: Maya Robinson and Photos by Getty and Netflix This week, Vulture will be publishing our critics’ year-end lists. 1. Chelsea Peretti, One of the Greats Chelsea Peretti has the most singular comedic voice of any stand-up of this generation. Over years of doing comedy, writing on shows like Parks and Recreation , and owning social media, Peretti has separated herself from her peers. I’ll it put this way: If every comedian is playing a character (himself or herself), Peretti’s is the most complicated and richly rendered. Onstage, she’s a tangle of contradictions: silly and cutting; earnest and ironic; broad and subtle; and, most important, confident and insecure. All of this is perfectly captured in One of the Greats , Peretti’s first hourlong special, which premiered on Netflix in November. Instead of normal audience-cutaway shots, One of the Greats cuts to fictional audience reactions — of a dog; of Peretti dressed as a clown; of a guy shouting, “You’re … [Read more...] about The 11 Best Stand-Up Specials of 2014
Harry Styles, Work in Progress
Photo: Harry Styles via YouTube The last time Harry Styles released an album, the rollout did not go as planned. One morning, the British singer-songwriter and erstwhile One Direction member was a guest on The Howard Stern Show , where he answered questions about his love life and performed songs off his late-2019 sophomore album, Fine Line . The next, he was on an unplanned break in the States, where an explosion of COVID-19 infections forced businesses and venues to close. Styles wisely canceled a spring 2020 North American tour out of caution; that March, for the first time in a long while, the singer found himself taking inventory of relationships neglected during his tenure in the boy band, which released an album every year between 2011 and 2015 and spent many of the intervening months on the road. It seemed as though Styles would initially maintain a similar pace in his solo career as the spring 2017 release of his self-titled debut dovetailed with the summer … [Read more...] about Harry Styles, Work in Progress

Your wedding is likely going to be one of the biggest days of your life, and most people want to be surrounded by their loved ones. So, why should our beloved pets have to miss out on all the fun? Particularly when you probably love your dog more than that second cousin you only see every other Christmas. A new study by financial comparison company money.co.uk has revealed the biggest trends set to dominate weddings in 2022 and beyond – and having pets in attendance has taken the top spot. Searches for pets at weddings have seen a 200% year-on-year increase. Are we heading for 1997 all over again?
David Mellor still bristles with anger as he recalls the night of May 1, 1997. After 18 years as the MP for Putney, he was one of the Tory big beasts felled by an unstoppable Labour landslide that stripped him of not only his seat, but also his dignity. “It was awful,” he recalls. “I was furious about the whole thing, and it was so unnecessary. John Major was the nicest of men, but he had become completely ineffective and should have stepped down.” The sight of Mellor trading insults with Sir James Goldsmith, founder of the short-lived Referendum Party, who had stood against him, became one of the defining images of the Conservatives’ humbling that night, together with the defence secretary Michael Portillo losing his “safe” seat to an unknown Labour councillor. “I was being barracked by Goldsmith, I was being barracked by the Sportsman’s Alliance party candidate, so I couldn’t even say goodbye to my constituency properly,” says Mellor, who still feels the need to point out that … [Read more...] about Are we heading for 1997 all over again?
