A child who reportedly stole eight vehicles in Dunedin overnight has been detained by police. Seven of the vehicles were Mazda Demios – the most commonly stolen car in New Zealand – and were recovered around various parts of Dunedin on Monday night and Tuesday morning, Senior Sergeant Anthony Bond said. Police patrols were spotted at various key arterial routes around the city as they searched for the driver, who Stuff understands is 12 years old. Bond confirmed the youth was located returning to a stolen vehicle in the Mosgiel area on Tuesday afternoon. Two Invercargill men were woken up in the early hours of Saturday morning by a fire in their front yard. One of the two cars parked up against their house had caught alight and the fire soon spread to the second vehicle. “Someone must have torched the car,” one of the residents, who asked not to be named, said. He was pulling police tape of the vehicles in the daylight, fearful of drawing too much attention to the scene. Jeremy Hawkes is turning his parent’s old restaurant into a street food eatery. He and wife Keiko have bought Glengrae Parks, the company that operated the Paddington Arms Restaurant & Bar in Invercargill. It closed in December and is undergoing minor renovations before officially opening as Crafty’s Bar & Grill in July. Glengrae Parks was owned by Hawkes’ parents Graham and Glenise. Coastal and Central Southland rivers reached flood warning broadcast level as Southland was recorded as the wettest place in New Zealand on Sunday. This comes after gusts reached up to 96kms per hour in parts of coastal Southland on Saturday, lifting roofs and sending trampolines flying , with strong winds expected to continue in the coming days. Environment Southland switched its flood warnings on Sunday afternoon, but a spokesperson said this was likely to happen on and off throughout winter as water levels rose in streams and rivers. MetService forecaster Gerard Bellam said 41.5mm of rain fell at Edendale in the 17 hours between midnight and 5pm, while 22mm had fallen at Stewart Island, 20mm in Invercargill, 19mm fell in Gore, and 18mm fell in Riverton.
