The Guam Visitors Bureau released the April 2018 arrivals report, which confirmed that Guam received 117,689 visitors, making April 2018 the second-best April on record. This is significant as April tends to be one of the slowest months of the year and signals the start of the visitor industry’s off-season. While we have seen some records in visitor arrivals this year, the industry is constantly facing challenges that are sometimes beyond our control. One of the greatest lessons I’ve learned while working for GVB is that we must be persistent in our pursuit of new opportunities. A seven-year plan to transform Derry’s tourism industry is to be unveiled tomorrow at a conference co-hosted by the city’s Chamber of Commerce, Derry and Strabane District Council and Visit Derry. The conference, entitled ‘A new level of Ambition’, will take place in the city’s Guildhall and will be officially opened by Chamber President Jennifer McKeever at 9.30am.Ms McKeever said: “The Chamber is delighted to jointly host this hugely significant conference. Not all jobs are created equal, a study on average salaries across Germany has shown. Career networking site XING released the report last Tuesday based on a member survey in an attempt to show income averages in many of Germany's biggest fields. Those working in hotels and restaurants may find the survey results to be particularly displeasing. According to the study, the food and tourism industry has the lowest average salaries at only €50,319 per year. Runner-up for lowest pay is the Marketing and PR branch, where professionals earn an average of €51,272 every year. This year’s big winners in terms of salary are those in banking and financial services, who the study found make an average of €83,371 across the board. Not far behind is the insurance industry at an €82,554 annual average and consulting jobs with €75,956. Senior Aboyne Academy pupils were given an insight into career opportunities in the tourism and hospitality sector during a recent visit to Glen Tanar Estate. It involved staff from Hilton Grand Vacations Club at Craigendarroch and the estate.Thirty S4, S5 and S6 students were involved in practical, interactive workshops highlighting the range of jobs open to them in catering, events, hospitality and wildlife tourism.During the events and catering workshop, they took part in a ‘banqueting challenge’ in which they were tasked with setting a table for a wedding, and received a chef demonstration.The wildlife tourism event saw pupils experience the customer service role of a ghillie and deer stalker, with a demonstration of wildlife team equipment, followed by a tour with a gamekeeper explaining his role as a tour guide.
