Liverpool fans found themselves in an unusual position on Sunday. With title-rivals Tottenham Hotspur hosting Manchester United, while Reds wouldn’t stretch as far as wanting a Red Devils win, a positive result for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side would give their own Premier League title hopes a further boost. Sure enough, with David De Gea back to his best for United, Marcus Rashford’s goal on the stroke of half-time was enough to inflict defeat on Spurs at Wembley. After beating AFC Bournemouth 5-0 on Boxing Day, Mauricio Pochettino’s men sat second in the Premier League and just six points off Liverpool. But defeat to Manchester United was their second from their last three league outings, now leaving them nine points off Jurgen Klopp’s side and behind Manchester City in third place as well. Meanwhile, the gap behind Pep Guardiola’s men could extend further should City beat Wolverhampton Wanderers on Monday night. And the bad news for Tottenham … [Read more...] about Was this the final nail in Tottenham’s Premier League title challenge?

Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri insists that the Premier League title race is still between Liverpool and Manchester City, despite Tottenham leapfrogging the champions to take second place. Spurs now sit a point ahead of City following their 5-0 Boxing Day victory over Bournemouth, with Pep Guardiola's side losing 2-1 at Leicester on the same day. Mauricio Pochettino's men are now the closest challengers to Liverpool in the table, sitting six points behind the Reds. They are currently on a run of five straight Premier League victories, and would move to just three points behind Liverpool, at least for a couple of hours, if they beat Wolves at Wembley on Saturday. But Sarri - whose Chelsea side sit fourth, 11 points off the top - doesn't see them battling it out for the title at the end of the season. "You know very well my opinion," said the Italian at his press conference ahead of Sunday's trip to Crystal Palace. "As I said from the beginning of the season there are two teams a step … [Read more...] about Maurizio Sarri makes Premier League title prediction
Craig Bellamy might have divided loyalties over the Premier League title race this season having played for City and Liverpool, but he's backed the Blues to come out on top. City are going through a tough spell at the moment, losing three of their last four league fixtures to allow Liverpool to build up a seven point lead at the top. Pep Guardiola's side are in third, a point behind Tottenham, but Bellamy still believes they will finish the season top of the pile for the second year running. Liverpool are unbeaten at the halfway stage but they travel to the Etihad Stadium on Thursday and Bellamy insists Jurgen Klopp's men will be beaten at some point this season, with City holding the advantage thanks to the presence of Guardiola in the dugout. "I don't believe Liverpool will go unbeaten, they will lose one or two games, and I personally think Man City will win the league," Bellamy said on Sky Sports' The Debate. "I think Pep Guardiola would be rubbing his hands saying 'game on - … [Read more...] about Bellamy backs Man City to beat Liverpool to Premier League title
It's been two and a half years since Tottenham Hotspur managed to finish third in a two-horse Premier League title race. For so much of the 2015/16 season, Spurs provided the competition for eventual winners Leicester City before they somehow conspired to lose 5-1 away to Newcastle on the final day of the campaign. It allowed local rivals Arsenal to sneak in and finish closest to Claudio Ranieri's history-makers, who incredibly pulled off the feat of winning the title after starting the season as one of the favourites for relegation. Coming up to three years on, it appears as though Mauricio Pochettino is again making a play to finish third behind what many believe to be another two-horse run. With Liverpool top of tree at Christmas and a four-point buffer giving them comfort over Manchester City, Reds fans may be forgiven for overlooking the emerging Spurs side. But while the most difficult challenge for Liverpool is likely to come from the blue half of Manchester - the side who … [Read more...] about The ‘Fab Four’ problem Liverpool have in Premier League title race

The Argentinian has been heavily linked with the vacancy at Old Trafford following Jose Mourinho’s sacking last week. However, after a 6-2 thumping of Everton put them within six points of Premier League leaders Liverpool and two behind second-placed Manchester City, there is only one target on Pochettino’s mind. “Talking about rumours, there are a lot of rumours,” he said “This guy (Spurs’ press officer) became upset again or angry (by questions about United) but we cannot talk, we need to be focused on our jobs at Tottenham and do our best to try to be successful. “I still believe Liverpool and Manchester City are the real contenders and … [Read more...] about Mauricio Pochettino fully focused on Tottenham’s Premier League title ambitions
