Liverpool are facing a nightmare Champions League group - despite reaching the final of the competition last season. The Reds knocked out Sevilla, Spartak Moscow, Maribor in the group stages last year before crashing through Porto, Manchester City and Roma in the knockout stages. They were eventually beaten by Real Madrid in Kiev - with Sadio Mane's goal cancelled out by Karim Benzema and Gareth Bale's sensational brace. Jurgen Klopp was given a big boost in their hopes for a comfortable group this season, as Basel's defeat to Greek PAOK in the second qualifying stage means that if Benfica also slip up then the Merseyside club will be seeded in Pot Two. The Swiss club's elimination means Liverpool are now the highest-ranked third seeds in the competition - and will move up into Pot 2 if Benfica fail to qualify for the group stages, as originally reported by the Liverpool Echo. The Portuguese side beat Fenerbahce 1-0 in the first leg but face a tricky second tie in Turkey on August … [Read more...] about Why Liverpool are facing a nightmare Champions League group

The Premier League season may not kick off until next week, but the Champions League is already well underway. And while last season's finalists Liverpool don't begin their run in the competition until September 18, they already face a potentially tricky group stage, reports the Liverpool Echo. The Reds seeding still needs to be determined, but it did receive a boost as Basel suffered a shock exit at the hands of PAOK on Wednesday night. The Swiss club's elimination means Liverpool are now the highest-ranked third seeds in the competition - and will move into Pot 2 if Benfica fail to qualify for the group stages. The Portuguese side will meet Fenerbahce in a two-legged tie on August 7 and 14, and will face one further hurdle if they progress. Even though Liverpool's own fate is not yet known, the potential seedings have started to take shape. Indeed, Pot 1 is already confirmed, with only Liverpool or Benfica left to complete Pot 2. Pot 3 and Pot 4 become a little bit more difficult, … [Read more...] about Why Liverpool face nightmare Champions League group
Manchester United could face a tricky Champions League group stage draw next season following Real Madrid's weekend triumph. United will be drawn from pot 2, as they were last season, since Premier League champions City have the privilege of being among the seeds. Uefa has also rewarded the Europa League winners with pot 1 status, so Atletico Madrid are seeded. As usual, clubs cannot draw teams from their own nation until the quarter-final stage, so United will be kept apart from City, Liverpool and Tottenham. They could be drawn with either of the Madrid clubs, Bayern Munich, Barcelona, Juventus, Paris Saint-Germain or Lokomotiv Moscow from pot 1. Barca, Bayern, City, Juve, PSG and Lokomotiv are seeded since they are champions of the top six associations based on the 2017 Uefa coefficients. United are alongside Borussia Dortmund, Porto, Shakhtar Donetsk, Napoli and Tottenham in pot 2 and will be joined by the two clubs with the highest coefficient once the qualifying round … [Read more...] about Who Manchester United could draw in Champions League group stage
