Situation critical for Derby County, a club in freefall with a manager, Wayne Rooney, under increasing pressure and facing relegation to the third tier for the first time since 1986. Rooney is preparing for one of the most significant matches in Derby’s recent history this weekend, operating against a backdrop of turmoil which has plunged the Championship club into crisis. With only one victory from the last 12 matches, Derby are in serious danger and Rooney's first managerial assignment is proving more difficult than he could have ever envisaged . It is only three months since he was deservedly appointed , and at that time few supporters would have predicted the season ending like this. Off-field issues, including a failed takeover by Bin Zayed International , and Derby’s ongoing dispute with the Football League have hung over Pride Park like a dark cloud and remain unresolved. Four successive defeats have ensured Saturday’s home game against Birmingham is potentially … [Read more...] about Derby County in crisis: Doubts over Wayne Rooney, Steve McClaren ‘sidelined’ and relegation threat looming

Total lunar eclipse: Blood Moon to appear tonight in the UK – here’s when you can see it
The UK's only total lunar eclipse of the year will take place tonight, giving people the chance to see a blood Moon. People across the country will get a chance to see the celestial event, which is caused by the Earth coming between the Sun and the Moon. During the event, the Moon usually turns a deep red due to light from all of Earth's sunrises and sunsets reflecting onto its surface. While stargazers will not be able to see every part of the eclipse, they will be able to see it at totality, which is expected to last for around an hour and a half. The rare sight will also be referred to as a super flower blood Moon, with the name given to the first full Moon in May due to it coinciding with spring. Advertisement The eclipse will be visible across South America, most of North America, parts of Europe and Africa. When will you be able to see it? In the UK, the Moon will start to enter the Earth's partial shadow just after 2.30am, according to the … [Read more...] about Total lunar eclipse: Blood Moon to appear tonight in the UK – here’s when you can see it
Generation Foodie: Our changing epicurean nation
(CBS News) Millions of Americans appear to be caught up in a feeding frenzy. They're not just cooking food and eating food - they're TALKING food, almost non-stop . . . barely pausing to take a bite. Our Cover Story is reported now by Lee Cowan: When celebrated chef Wolfgang Puck renovated his famous Spago restaurant in Beverly Hills. there was a buzz I didn't quite get. Don't get me wrong. I love a good restaurant - but I'm by no means a Foodie. In fact, I clam up when I'm expected to talk about food in any intelligent manner beyond "Mmmmmm." Chef Puck endured my lack of food sophistication with a smile, as he tried to explain why everyone ELSE, it seems, is talking about, blogging about, even Instagramming their food. "Today, people really know about food," he said. "They read about food, they see it on television, they know what good quality is. All of a sudden now, food and wine has become one of the premiere conversation pieces." And the reason has little to do … [Read more...] about Generation Foodie: Our changing epicurean nation

Wayne Rooney is all the proof you need that great players rarely make great managers
Given the stakes for his club and his career Wayne Rooney seemed remarkably relaxed on Saturday. Derby played out a 3-3 draw with Sheffield Wednesday , a result which secured their 15th consecutive Championship season. Their manager was largely impassive on the sidelines. His coaches did the shouting, he scowled at the bronze bust of Steve Bloomer by the dugouts. Perhaps you would be relaxed too if your playing days had included such high stakes: three Champions League finals, the same number of World Cups, two tragic defeats in the first round of the MLS playoffs. Perhaps it also helps if you feel unsackable. Derby County have a big-name manager fetish. Before Wayne Rooney there was Phillip Cocu and Frank Lampard. Cocu finished 10th in his first season but his 2020/21 was a disaster. Lampard took the club to a play-off final, seeing off Marcello Bielsa in a spygate revenge game then running Aston Villa close at Wembley. Rooney’s spell will be spun as a similar success, … [Read more...] about Wayne Rooney is all the proof you need that great players rarely make great managers
Wayne Rooney pleads for end to Derby takeover saga as Nottingham Forest win feisty ‘Brian Clough Trophy’
It may be some time before the Brian Clough Trophy is contested again, and Derby County are now facing a crucial 10 days in their future. With the threat of liquidation hanging over them, the situation is critical as Derby’s administrators race to secure a preferred bidder who can provide the funds to finish the season and then, finally, complete a takeover. Derby have been in administration for four months and must show the Football League proof of the finance needed to fulfil their remaining fixtures by Feb 1, or risk expulsion. Three parties, including former Newcastle owner Mike Ashley, are interested in purchasing the club and against this turbulent backdrop, manager Wayne Rooney continues to enhance his reputation. This was the 100th league meeting between these famous old clubs, with Forest extending their unbeaten run against their rivals down the Brian Clough Way dual carriageway to 10 matches. Now the focus will turn to Quantuma, the Derby administrators, who are charged … [Read more...] about Wayne Rooney pleads for end to Derby takeover saga as Nottingham Forest win feisty ‘Brian Clough Trophy’
Wayne Rooney’s managerial career is at risk of sinking with Derby
There were many times in his playing career when, with his back to the wall, or in the most unpromising of circumstances, the great gift of talent that Wayne Rooney had to fall back upon was enough for him to win the argument, whatever the odds. It was possible at times to take issue with the decisions that had put him in a difficult position but the solution – a game-changing goal, a performance of exceptional skill – always felt unanswerable. Rooney the player almost always found a way. What to make of Rooney the manager, now facing a game at Pride Park a week on Friday that feels fundamental to the fortunes of Derby County for a long time to come. Rooney’s team are in an eight-game struggle to stay in the Championship where the bottom of the table looks like the proverbial pub fight – insomuch as it is hard to make out who could be said to be winning. Games in hand, managerial sackings, fluctuations in form, Football League charges – it is, to put it mildly, all kicking off. … [Read more...] about Wayne Rooney’s managerial career is at risk of sinking with Derby
Wayne Rooney on being slapped by his dad, and Coleen on her husband’s prostitution shame
Wayne Rooney describes being "slapped" by his father in a new documentary which he hopes explains the dramatic "ups and downs" of his life in the spotlight. In the candid film revisiting his "very tough" upbringing in Croxteth, Liverpool, the former England captain's wife, Coleen, also opens up for the first time on forgiving him for his indiscretions with prostitutes. "I knew groups Wayne was hanging around with - together with alcohol - not good," she said of the heartache he admitted causing in 2004. "I forgive him but it wasn't acceptable." On Tuesday Rooney spoke emotionally of his rollercoaster life since bursting onto the scene aged 16 at Everton, revealing it "was a big decision for me" to cooperate in the documentary which began filming in his last year of playing. The film, to be released early next year on Amazon's Prime Video, sees the former England captain admit in his own words that he "weren't the nicest kid" and he "had a lot of fights when I was younger". … [Read more...] about Wayne Rooney on being slapped by his dad, and Coleen on her husband’s prostitution shame
Arsenal defer Derby’s £1.4m instalment for Krystian Bielik until next year
Arsenal have agreed a deal with crisis-hit Derby to defer a payment worth over £1.4 million for their former midfielder Krystian Bielik. Championship club Derby are in administration and owed another significant cash instalment to Arsenal for Bielik this month, with the threat of another charge being added to their transfer embargo on non-payment. As revealed by Telegraph Sport on Friday, Arsenal are still owed a total of around £8 million for the Polish international, who Derby signed in August 2019, which any prospective buyer will have to take on as a liability. Derby were late paying the instalment last month and, due to their dire financial situation, would have been unable to pay the seven-figure fee for October. However, it has emerged that Arsenal have now struck an agreement with the club to delay the payment until next year to assist their cash-flow, in a welcome development for the east Midlands club. Carl Jackson, from Derby's administrators Quantuma, said on … [Read more...] about Arsenal defer Derby’s £1.4m instalment for Krystian Bielik until next year
