Keir Starmer backs calls for Tory MP arrested on suspicion of rape to be named
Sir Keir Starmer has backed calls to publicly name the Conservative MP arrested on suspicion of rape amid criticism of how the Tory Party has handled the situation. At a briefing on Wednesday afternoon , the Labour leader’s spokesman said the MP in question should be stripped of the party whip given the gravity of the allegations. The spokesman said that would “inevitably” lead to the person being named publicly, but adding: “Taking action is the right thing to do.” He added: “It’s difficult to reach a conclusion other than the fact that the whip should be withdrawn and at that point that would inevitably mean that the name became public. But taking action is the right thing to do.” The unnamed male MP has been released on bail , it emerged on Wednesday morning. On Tuesday, the Metropolitan Police confirmed that an arrest had been made. A spokesman said: “A man, aged in his 50s, was arrested on suspicion of indecent assault, sexual assault, rape, abuse of position of … [Read more...] about Keir Starmer backs calls for Tory MP arrested on suspicion of rape to be named

Chef says Tory MP is ‘treating people like peasants’ after cooking 30p meals
A chef has had a go at cooking 30p meals to prove a Tory MP’s claims that many people ‘cannot cook or budget’ as being ‘rubbish’. Ashfield MP Lee Anderson sparked fury last week when he stated it was possible to cook ‘nutritious meals’ for around 30p a day . Now, a chef has decided to put Mr Anderson’s claims to test, and unsurprisingly has found them to be ‘a load of rubbish’. Gareth Mason, 34, set about proving Mr Anderson wrong by challenging himself to cook seven basic meals that would fit within the meagre 30p budget. The professional chef who has 19-years of experience found that while you could create meals for 30p – they were not nutritionally balanced or big enough sustain an adult. With the limited budget Gareth made crab stick salad, burgers, spaghetti Napoli, beans on toast, a jacket potato with beans, and a ‘spam fritter’ made from cheap luncheon meat. ‘I’ve come to the conclusion it’s a load of rubbish,’ the head chef at Absolute Bistros in … [Read more...] about Chef says Tory MP is ‘treating people like peasants’ after cooking 30p meals
Tory MPs vote down emergency budget to tackle cost of living crisis
Tory MPs have voted down plans to trigger an emergency budget despite the worsening cost of living crisis. The Labour amendment to the Queen’s Speech was defeated by 312 to 229 tonight. It comes on the same day inflation shot up to its highest level in 40 years , sparking warnings the UK is headed for a recession. Last night, Tories also voted against Labour’s proposal for a windfall tax that the party said could save struggling families around £600 a year. Earlier, Shadow chancellor Rachel Reeves tore into the government, branding ministers ‘out of touch’ and ‘out of ideas’. She said it was ‘unconscionable’ that the government was piling taxes on working people in the middle of a crisis and argued an emergency budget was needed to deal with the lack of support on offer. She said that this must include a windfall tax to ‘help get bills down and help families and pensioners weather this storm’. She added: ‘Today’s inflation data will add to the worries … [Read more...] about Tory MPs vote down emergency budget to tackle cost of living crisis
EU mulls targeted trade war ‘on troublesome Brexiteer MPs and Tory ministers’
The European Union is considering a targeted trade war on troublesome Brexiteer MPs and Tory ministers, sources told The Telegraph, as the bloc war-gamed its response to Boris Johnson’s plan to override the Northern Ireland Protocol . A senior diplomatic source said that Brussels has held talks over potential reprisals, including a plan to turn the Prime Minister’s political allies against him if he follows through with his threat to rip up the Brexit Withdrawal Agreement . Under the plan, which is still in its early stages, British products made in "red wall" constituencies, as well as those with elected Cabinet ministers and vocal Brexiteers, face crippling trade tariffs in the hope of generating enough pressure to force Mr Johnson into a U-turn. A senior EU diplomat told The Telegraph: “It is a longstanding practice of the [European] Commission to target its trade defence policy to avoid contingent effects and to support political objectives.” Nissan cars, Cadbury … [Read more...] about EU mulls targeted trade war ‘on troublesome Brexiteer MPs and Tory ministers’
‘A fish rots from its head’: Lib Dem leader attacks PM saying Tories ‘dragging feet’ over accused MP
The Liberal Democrat leader has claimed that Boris Johnson bears responsibility for a rotten political culture and that Tories are "dragging their feet" over rape claims against an MP. Sir Ed Davey told Sky News's Kay Burley that the arrest of an unnamed Conservative over a series of allegations was "utterly shocking". He said some MPs were "behaving outrageously" and that in other walks of life they would be expected to lose their jobs - but that Tories were "dragging their feet" when it came to one of their own number. The unnamed man in his 50s was arrested on Tuesday over allegations dating back to between 2002 and 2009. He has been released on bail to a date in mid-June pending further enquiries. Labour is calling on the Conservatives to suspend the man from the parliamentary party, meaning his identity would become public.
