Boris Johnson moaned his £145k job was like being ‘imprisoned in a steel condom’

August 9, 2022 by www.mirror.co.uk

Boris Johnson moaned his £145k-a-year job as Foreign Secretary was like being 'imprisoned in a steel condom’, it has emerged. The future PM suggested he couldn’t say anything controversial while representing Britain overseas, Former Scottish Tory leader Ruth Davidson said. She added the comment seemed “odd” to her, because she hadn’t asked him what he thought or raised the subject of condoms at all. He also landed himself in hot water as Foreign Secretary regardless - making incorrect claims about British-Iranian prisoner Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe that her husband said "enabled a propaganda campaign" against her. Boris Johnson was forced to give up his £250k-a-year weekly column for the Daily Telegraph when he became Foreign Secretary. He was then rehired on £275k without consulting the post-government jobs watchdog. Mr Johnson became foreign secretary in 2016 and resigned in 2018 over Theresa May's Brexit plans. Tory leadership: Liz Truss still favours tax cuts to ease economic crisis

August 9, 2022 by www.bbc.co.uk

Published 30 minutes ago comments Comments Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Related Topics Tory leadership Tory leadership candidate Liz Truss has insisted tax cuts were still the best way to ease the burden of soaring living costs. Ms Truss and her rival Rishi Sunak are under pressure to outline how they would support people with rising bills. When asked what she would do, Ms Truss said cutting taxes would let people "keep more of their own money". The worsening UK economy has been central to the Tory leadership campaign. Ms Truss and Mr Sunak, who are competing to be the next British prime minister, have clashed over their rival plans to deal with the economic fallout of skyrocketing energy prices. The Bank of England has predicted inflation - how fast prices are rising - will hit 13% and the UK will plunge into a recession later … [Read more...] about Tory leadership: Liz Truss still favours tax cuts to ease economic crisis

Kemi Badenoch: I only decided to run for Tory leadership a day after Boris Johnson quit

July 22, 2022 by www.telegraph.co.uk

Kemi Badenoch, the junior former minister who electrified the Tory leadership contest , has said she feels she has “worked hard enough” to be given a job when the next prime minister forms a new government. Speaking to The Telegraph’s Chopper’s Politics podcast , Mrs Badenoch revealed that she only decided to stand the day after Boris Johnson had said he would resign – and her children found out from the TV news. The Brexiteer was widely praised for her fresh approach to campaigning in the leadership contest , with clear Right-wing policies that won support among the grassroots in polling. She got to the final four candidates and was knocked out of the race on Tuesda y after winning the backing of 59 MPs – nearly one in six of the parliamentary party including Michael Gove, the former Cabinet minister. In her first interview since, Mrs Badenoch – who has been tipped as a future Home Secretary – declined to say who she had supported in the final round of voting or what … [Read more...] about Kemi Badenoch: I only decided to run for Tory leadership a day after Boris Johnson quit

John Bercow’s case shows once again that Parliament is hopeless at dealing with bullies

March 9, 2022 by www.telegraph.co.uk

‘His evidence in the investigations, the findings of the commissioner, and his submissions to us, show also that the respondent has been a serial liar.” A liar. That was the conclusion of the report by Sir Stephen Irwin into the appeal by former Commons Speaker John Bercow over allegations he bullied three members of staff. In the rarefied world of Parliament there is no more damning assertion; MPs are, after all, Honourable Members, and to doubt their word is to undermine their very existence. In the Commons it is forbidden to accuse another Member of playing fast and loose with the vérité – SNP leader Ian Blackford was cast out of the Chamber just a few weeks ago for suggesting Boris Johnson may have been telling porkies over the Downing Street party scandal. So Sir Stephen’s findings could not be more damaging to Mr Bercow’s future prospects; he can wave goodbye to his hopes of a peerage – gone too is his dream of playing some kind of senior role in the Labour Party, or … [Read more...] about John Bercow’s case shows once again that Parliament is hopeless at dealing with bullies

Energy bills forecast to hit over £4,200 a year

August 9, 2022 by www.bbc.co.uk

By Karen Hoggan Published 22 minutes ago Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Energy bills for a typical household could hit £4,266 next year, consultancy Cornwall Insight has warned. The higher estimate means the average household would be paying £355 a month, instead of £164 a month currently. Cornwall cited regulator Ofgem's decision to change the price cap every three months instead of six and higher wholesale prices for its high forecast. But Ofgem said no forecast for next year could be "robust" at this stage and had "limited value". The latest price cap - the maximum amount suppliers can charge customers for average energy usage in England, Scotland and Wales for October - is due to be announced at the end of this month. Cornwall expects this to rise to £3,582 a year, compared to the regulator's prediction of £2,800 a year . Dr Craig Lowrey, … [Read more...] about Energy bills forecast to hit over £4,200 a year

More than 115,000 Royal Mail workers vote for strike action in row over pay

July 19, 2022 by www.dailymail.co.uk

More than 115,000 Royal Mail staff have voted in favour of a national strike in what could be the first in a wave of public sector walk outs in the coming months as essential workers continue to struggle with the cost of living crisis. In a ballot announced today, the Communication Workers Union (CWU) – which represents Royal Mail Group workers – voted by 97.6%, on a 77% turnout, to take industrial action. The union is demanding that Royal Mail group enters into negotiations to secure 'a straight, no-strings pay increase for workers.' The Royal Mail said it was 'disappointed' by the strike announcement after offering workers a 5.5% salary boost. It comes as the Government geared up for a hot summer and autumn fight with trade unions today as it offered two million public sector workers including doctors and nurses below-inflation pay rises. More than a million NHS staff including nurses, midwives and paramedics have been offered increased that will see the worst-paid … [Read more...] about More than 115,000 Royal Mail workers vote for strike action in row over pay
