Retiring Judge Joanna Maze, is looking forward to losing her anonymity in the South Canterbury community she loves but has remained at arm’s length from for the past 11 years. Maze, Timaru's resident District Court judge since September 2011, finished her final court sitting on Friday with "a courtesy farewell between bench and bar" and told The Timaru Herald she made the decision to retire "when I knew that I was beginning to run out of energy ... and a sense that I wanted to have some time left still to do things for myself". "It's a job where you have to maintain a degree of separateness in your life, and that does suit my personality, and this has been a wonderful community to be part of, but I'm ready to be more part of it and that isn't entirely consistent with being a judge in a small community,’’ she said. STUFF Justine Shera shares her weight loss surgery journey When Justine Shera realised she was being a spectator in her son’s life due to her weight, she knew she had to do something about it. “I just had this epiphany moment crying like, oh my god, I'm just watching this little boy grow up, and his memories are going to be of dad playing with him and that's not going to involve me,” the 45-year-old New Plymouth woman says. After losing and gaining the same 40 kilograms three different times in her adult life, Shera decided to get $25,000 weight loss surgery to try and keep the weight off for good. Now the R&B singer has been sentenced to spend the next three decades behind bars. A jury found Kelly guilty in September of sex trafficking charges. While Kelly, born Robert Sylvester Kelly, has vehemently denied the allegations, his accusers testified in detail that he subjected them to perverse and sadistic whims when they were underage. Wellingtonians tour through newly reopened St James Theatre
After three years of earthquake strengthening and refurbishment, crowds of Wellingtonians got to tour through the newly reopened St James Theatre over the weekend . On Saturday Wellingtonians were able to take a guided walk through the heritage theatre between 10am and 8pm. The tour was part of a celebration of the capital’s theatre district, with other open days and behind-the-scenes tours running at BATS Theatre, Circa, Hannah Playhouse and Te Auaha. At the St James, performers from Slightly Isolated Dog led groups of up to 15 people through the foyer and out into the stage area then back onto Courtenay Place. In the evening a street parade with performers led people from Wellington’s other theatres back to the St James, with a closed-off street party then hosted outside by stand-up comic Sameena Zehra. Djazia Chaib-Eddour, 44, is accused of being part of a crowd that intimidated Newsnight's political editor Nick Watt at a Whitehall rally in June 2021. She told the court she "assumed" they were having a discussion. Ms Chaib-Eddour and four others denied using words or behaviour with intent to cause harassment, alarm or distress.
