What is the Lumipulse test for Alzheimer’s disease? In May, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration permitted marketing of the Lumipulse (G B-Amyloid Ratio [1-42/1-40]) test to Fujirebio Diagnostics, Inc. of Malvern, Pennsylvania. The test, which was granted Breakthrough Device Designation by the FDA, is the first FDA-authorized in vitro diagnostic test in the United States to aid in the assessment of B-Amyloid pathology in patients being evaluated for Alzheimer’s disease and other causes of cognitive decline. The presence of B-Amyloid plaques in the brain, characteristic of Alzheimer’s disease, are believed to be contributing factors in the loss of cognitive function. Accurately evaluating this amyloid pathology is difficult, and typically clinicians rely primarily on cognitive assessments, which include cognitive screening testing. Yet, according to a study in Ann Neurol (2009) by Julie A. Schneider, Z. Leurgans, and S.E. Bennet DA, respectively, in the early stages of the … [Read more...] about New test can detect plaques early in the disease: Alzheimer’s Q&A

What’s Better in Britain
This September marks my fifth year of living in Britain, a milestone that comes with its own special reward: a test. Specifically, the “ Life in the U.K. Test ,” an examination that anyone seeking to obtain permanent residency rights in the country and ultimately British citizenship must take. The test covers all sorts of questions on Britain’s history—including such seeming trivia as the specific ways Henry VIII got rid of each of his six wives—its laws, its values, and its traditions. “Comedy and satire, the ability to laugh at ourselves, are an important part of the U.K. character,” reads one passage from the official study handbook. In another, pubs are described as “an important part of U.K. social culture.” Self-deprecating humor and pub culture are just some of the survival skills you naturally pick up if you live here long enough. But as I prepare for this exam, I can’t help but think about all the practical things about British life that the test-prep materials leave … [Read more...] about What’s Better in Britain
Could you be replaced by a robot? One in three businesses plan to invest in automation due to staffing shortages, survey suggests
One in three businesses are planning to invest in automation as a top priority amid staffing shortages, a survey has suggested. Firms facing recruitment problems are most likely to have automation high up on the agenda, according to the report from HSBC. The survey of 670 companies in the UK found that 40% are feeling negatively about their staffing levels and availability. The findings add to growing concerns about Britons losing their jobs to machines. It follows a study by Arden University last week which suggested almost a third of jobs in the UK could become redundant by 2030 due to automation and changing workforces. Advertisement The sector most likely to be impacted is the transport and storage industry, where over half (56%) of jobs are set to disappear, the research said. In manufacturing, 45% of roles are expected to go, while across the wholesale, retail and repair of motor vehicles the figure was 44%. Go Knock on Doors
B arring extreme developments , there will be no Voting Rights Act of 2022. As a result, in Arizona , Georgia , and many states in between , it will be more difficult to register to vote, more difficult to vote by mail, and more difficult to vote in person in the fall midterm elections than it was in 2020. Democrats and progressives must immediately figure out how to build winning political campaigns in swing states where election laws may suppress turnout, especially among the poor and people of color. We can begin by mounting a robust, coordinated field campaign. I’m not talking about the usual efforts of slogans and yard signs, but tens of thousands of paid canvassers employed full-time by Democratic groups, people who will pound the pavement for eight hours a day in every swing state, training with veteran organizers as they go. To my knowledge, this kind of ground campaign—at that kind of scale—doesn’t exist today. The last time it did was back in 1964, when young … [Read more...] about Go Knock on Doors
Being fat can work to your advantage if you’re a gamer, study finds
Being fat is actually an advantage when it comes to competing in video game tournaments, according to a new study. Obese people are more prone to impulsive behaviour - such as eating - and the trait boosts performance in esports , say scientists. And gorging on calorie-loaded biscuits and cakes and guzzling fizzy drinks is also good as the energy lift provides an edge over rivals during marathon competitions. The surprising finding has implications for larger people in the office, say scientists and bosses should consider them for computer-based activities . Lead author Dr Petr Parshakova said: "Employers have too little understanding of how to select employees for particular tasks. "We tried to answer the question: Does BMI affect the results of computer skills? This is the first such analysis ever conducted." The findings are based on CS:GO (Counter-Strike: Global Offensive) - a shooter game played by more than a million around the world. The BMI (body mass index) … [Read more...] about Being fat can work to your advantage if you’re a gamer, study finds

Children urged to blow the whistle on harmful online content
More children must blow the whistle on harmful content online, says Ofcom in its first campaign as the incoming regulator of social media firms. Its call for children and young people to put pressure on social media firms to take down harmful material follows its research showing only a sixth lodged complaints about it. This was despite more than two thirds of those aged 13 to 24 encountering potentially harmful content that ranged from bullying, abusive behaviour and threats to scams, misinformation and trolling. It is the first move by Ofcom to get social firms to clean up their act before the Government’s online safety bill gives it the powers to start investigating all social media companies for potential breaches. Its regulatory reach currently only extends to video-sharing sites. It will have powers to fine social media firms up to 10 per cent of their global turnover and shut down services if they fail to remove harmful content. It will also be able to prosecute … [Read more...] about Children urged to blow the whistle on harmful online content
