Rishi Sunak has refused to rule out introducing a one-off windfall tax on oil and gas producers in an attempt to cut household energy bills as Labour looks to force a Commons vote on the matter. Sir Keir Starmer's party are seeking to force a vote on an amendment which expresses regret that the policy was not included in the Queen's Speech amid the cost of living crisis . Debating the amendment in the Commons, shadow climate change and net zero secretary Ed Miliband said it was "shameful" that the government has not yet introduced a windfall tax and told Mr Sunak to "swallow your pride and get on with it". He called on Conservative MPs to join Labour in supporting the "fair and principled measure" which he said has support from business, trade unions and the "overwhelming majority of the public". After Cuba, Biden Moves to Ease Some Trump Sanctions on Oil-Rich Venezuela
Just one day after relaxing some restrictions against leftist-led Cuba, President Joe Biden 's administration has announced an easing of certain sanctions against oil-rich Venezuela. The back-to-back moves signal a new focus on the Western Hemisphere, at a time when the United States has largely been engaged on issues in Europe and Asia. A senior Biden administration official told reporters Tuesday that California-based Chevron Corporation would be permitted to negotiate its license with Venezuela's state-owned oil company, PDVSA, with the potential for conducting future activities, without yet reversing restrictions that would allow it to do business in the country. The official said that "fundamentally," the two sides are "just allowed to talk." According to the official, the move came at the behest of Venezuela's U.S.-backed opposition led by Unity Platform head Juan Guaidó, whom the U.S. and a number of its partners recognize as the country's interim president, as it … [Read more...] about After Cuba, Biden Moves to Ease Some Trump Sanctions on Oil-Rich Venezuela

Ryanair boss Michael O’Leary warns of holiday price hikes
Ryanair boss Michael O’Leary has warned flight prices could rise by nearly 10% this summer due to soaring demand for European holidays. He said holidaymakers should brace for prices to rise by a “high single-digit per cent” over the peak season as demand for breaks on European beach resorts rebounds thanks to the lifting of pandemic travel restrictions. The budget airline’s chief executive also said there were likely to be ongoing delays at airports, blaming staff shortages. Mr O’Leary said there are “pinch-points” in particular at Heathrow and Manchester , where he claimed “too many people” have been sacked. Recommended Coleen Rooney to resume evidence in Rebekah Vardy court battle - live ‘Putin likely to have lost third of troops in Ukraine’ – follow live He added he hoped to see the worst of the delays ease off in time for the busy summer season, but stressed it would still be a “challenge” for passengers getting through UK … [Read more...] about Ryanair boss Michael O’Leary warns of holiday price hikes
Record wage growth sparks inflation fears as minister expresses ‘surprise’ at Bailey food warning
Andrew Bailey has raised ministers' eyebrows for warning of "apocalyptic" food shortages as record wage growth raises fears that a dangerous inflationary spiral is taking hold in the economy. Brandon Lewis, the Northern Ireland Secretary, expressed “surprise” at the Bank of England Governor's comments about rising costs caused by the war in Ukraine blocking exports of wheat and cooking oils. “I was surprised to see that particular turn of phrase, I have to say,” Mr Lewis told BBC Breakfast. “But the Bank of England is independent, they will have their view of their assessment, their economic view of where things are and where things are going.” It came as new data from the Office for National Statistics showed pay packets jumped almost 10pc in March, helping workers keep up with the cost of living, but also risking making inflation worse. In February, Mr Bailey urged workers not to ask for a big pay rise this year , warning that "moderation" of wage rises was needed to … [Read more...] about Record wage growth sparks inflation fears as minister expresses ‘surprise’ at Bailey food warning
Censure vote vs Sri Lankan leader fails as crisis simmers
Sri Lanka's ruling party on Tuesday defeated a move in Parliament to urgently debate a motion censuring President Gotabaya Rajapaksa for the nation's worst economic crisis, which the prime minister said has left enough gasoline stocks for only a day. It's unclear when the motion will be taken up again. It doesn't legally bound Rajapaksa to quit, but his refusal to do so has already roiled Sri Lanka, which is on the brink of bankruptcy as it negotiates with other countries and institutions an economic lifeline to be able to import basic supplies, medicines and fuel. M.A Sumanthiran, a lawmaker from the opposition Tamil National Alliance, proposed that Parliament bypass the usual procedure to take up the motion against Rajapaksa urgently. But the ruling party defeated the motion with a 119-68 vote. Protesters have occupied the entrance to the president's office for more than a month calling for Rajapaksa's resignation. Months of anti-government rallies have led to … [Read more...] about Censure vote vs Sri Lankan leader fails as crisis simmers
U.S. demand for Syria ceasefire ignored as Turkey and Russia vow to continue war’s final battle
The American call for a ceasefire in the northwestern Syrian province of Idlib has fallen on deaf ears with Russia and Turkey both vowing to continue what appears to be the last battle of the nine-year war, despite the "horrifying" humanitarian crisis unfolding there, as the United Nations has described it. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Tuesday there is no military solution to the fighting in Idlib, which is the only major area of Syria that remains outside the control of President Bashar al-Assad and his Russian and Iranian allies. The region was home to some 3 million people before the regime launched its latest offensive in December, half of them refugees that fled fighting elsewhere in Syria. The area is largely controlled by Islamist militias, the strongest of which is Hayat Tahrir al-Sham which was formerly allied with Al-Qaeda. More than 900,000 people have left their homes as Syrian forces push into Idlib backed by Russian airstrikes. Rebels in Idlib are being … [Read more...] about U.S. demand for Syria ceasefire ignored as Turkey and Russia vow to continue war’s final battle

Passenger who landed plane recounts “scariest” moments after pilot collapsed at controls
A Florida man with no flying experience who kept his cool while landing a small plane last week says "the hand of God" was with him after the pilot collapsed at the controls. Meanwhile, a doctor told NBC's "Today" show that the pilot has been released from the hospital, calling his recovery a "miracle." Darren Harrison told "Today" that he was relaxing with his feet up in the back of the single-engine Cessna after a fishing trip in the Bahamas when the pilot told him and another passenger: "Guys, I gotta tell you I don't feel good." "He said, 'I've got a headache and I'm fuzzy and I just don't feel right," the 39-year-old flooring salesman said. "And I said, 'What do we need to do?' and at that point he didn't respond at all." Harrison climbed into the cockpit and saw that the plane was diving, and fast. "All I saw when I came up to the front was water out the right window and I knew it was coming quick," he said. "At that point I knew if I didn't react, that we would … [Read more...] about Passenger who landed plane recounts “scariest” moments after pilot collapsed at controls
