May 25, 2022 - 18:03 BST 19 children and two teachers died in Uvalde, Texas after an 18-year-old opened fire in Robb Elementary school. The teenage suspect had a handgun, an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle and high-capacity magazines. Texas Rep. Tony Gonzales represents the city of Uvalde, the scene of America's latest deadly mass shooting. Gonzales told "CBS Mornings" on Wednesday that right now, the focus shouldn't be on gun control policy, but instead should be focused on the families of the 19 children and two adults who were shot and killed at Robb Elementary School. "I'm happy to debate policy, not today. I mean, today, we, my community is hurting. You know, politicians like to divide us. Leaders unite us and we need to be united right now as Americans because what happened in Uvalde, Texas can happen anywhere," he said. The Staircase is a gripping true-crime drama that’s set to tackle the infamous trial of novelist Michael Peterson, after his wife Kathleen was found dead in mysterious circumstances. The eight-part series will follow the true story of Peterson , who was found guilty of murdering his wife Kathleen in 2003 after she was discovered dead at the bottom of the stairs in their Durham, North Carolina mansion. At the time, Michael maintained that his wife had ‘fallen down the stairs’ after she’d taken Valium and had drunk alcohol, however, a subsequent investigation maintained that Peterson was lying and that he’d bludgeoned her to death with a ‘blow-poke’ – a hollow instrument next to the family fireplace, that had mysteriously gone missing. American novelist Michael Peterson was convicted of killing his wife Kathleen in 2003, and he was sentenced to life in prison for her murder. After it came to light that some of the evidence that was used to convict him had been fabricated by a key witness, in 2017, Peterson submitted an Alford Plea to reduce the charge to manslaughter, and he was released. At the time of the trial, a French team made a series following the events and was also called The Staircase – directed by Jean-Xavier de Lestrade – before being released in 2004 and sold to broadcast channel Canal+. In 2012-2013, Lestrade returned to film Peterson and his family, covering the following developments in the case, which were released in a two-hour special – which was released on Netflix as a 13-part series in 2018. Rechristened the "Russia War Crimes House," the Russian residence in the Swiss Alpine town since 2018 is being used by a Ukrainian charity to expose Russia's war crimes in Ukraine.
