The Unite boss, Len McCluskey, has accused Labour’s deputy leader, Tom Watson, of trying to turn members against Jeremy Corbyn over the leadership’s refusal to fully back a second referendum. Tensions over the party’s second referendum policy broke out into the open on Sunday night as it braces for difficult European election results. McCluskey suggested Watson was part of an anti-Corbyn plot after the deputy leader said Labour’s approach to a public vote was “mealy-mouthed” and directly responsible for the party losing ground to the Liberal Democrats and Greens in the European polls. Watson won backing from one of Corbyn’s close allies, the shadow attorney general, Shami Chakrabarti, who said it was now “past midnight” and time to support a second referendum as a way of breaking the deadlock over Brexit. McCluskey, another ally of Corbyn and general secretary of Labour’s biggest trade union donor, said Watson was acting like … [Read more...] about Len McCluskey accuses Tom Watson of anti-Corbyn plot

Tom Watson quits as Labour deputy leader and steps down as MP
Tom Watson is quitting parliament and stepping down as Labour’s deputy leader, reopening the debate about the party’s direction under Jeremy Corbyn. Watson, who is one of Labour’s best-known figures, has represented the constituency of West Bromwich East since 2001. In a letter to Corbyn released by Labour, he said his decision to step down was “personal, not political”. He added: “Our many shared interests are less well known than our political differences, but I will continue to devote myself to the things we often talk about: gambling reform, music and arts, stopping press intrusion, obesity and public health and of course horticulture and cycling.” Watson has repeatedly clashed with Jeremy Corbyn, including over the Labour leader’s Brexit stance and his handling of antisemitism. The party’s conference in Brighton in September was overshadowed by a botched bid to abolish his post. The Labour leader called off the attempt to clip … [Read more...] about Tom Watson quits as Labour deputy leader and steps down as MP

Harvey Proctor vows to stand against Tom Watson at the next election in revenge for Labour’s deputy backing Carl Beech’s vile lies over VIP paedophile ring
One of the former politicians wrongly accused by a fantasist behind the bogus VIP paedophile claims is set to stand against Labour deputy leader Tom Watson in the next election. Former Tory MP Harvey Proctor, who was falsely accused of murder by Carl Beech, is furious that Watson amplified the false allegations by meeting Beech, making statements in Parliament and writing to police. After Watson refused to stand down over the scandal, Mr Proctor says he is preparing to take him on at the next election in a bid to rob him of his seat in Parliament. Mr Proctor was speaking ahead of Carl Beech's sentencing for 12 counts of perverting the course of justice and one of fraud, following his conviction earlier this week. Tom Watson, pictured earlier this week, is under pressure to resign over his role in amplifying bogus claims made by a fantasist behind the botched VIP peadophile ring investigation Mr Watson, who has been West Bromwich East MP since 2001, is already the target of anger from … [Read more...] about Harvey Proctor vows to stand against Tom Watson at the next election in revenge for Labour’s deputy backing Carl Beech’s vile lies over VIP paedophile ring
