I LOVE rainbows. They appear after violent storms, shining out across the sky like a natural kaleidoscope of soothing calm. But in the past few days, it’s been a rainbow which has ignited a firestorm in the world of football. When Paris Saint-Germain played a French league match against Montpellier last Saturday, the whole team including superstars Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe and Neymar wore rainbow colours on their shirts to mark Tuesday’s International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia. Except one. African midfielder Idrissa Gueye, who is a devout Muslim – strict forms of Islam don’t tolerate homosexuality - didn’t play because he didn’t want to wear the rainbow colours which were first created in the ‘70s as a symbol of pride and tolerance for the gay community. From boundary-crossing to abuse, these are signs it’s time to cut a relative out of your life
Deciding you’re better off without a family member in your life can be one of the hardest things to do – especially given the stigma surrounding estrangement. Integrative counsellor Billie Dunlevy says that cutting off family members is ‘still seen as a huge taboo.’ She tells Metro.co.uk: ‘Individuals who choose this self-protective path need support, not judgement. It’s not a decision anyone wants to have to make. ‘But while plenty of relationships can be mended and worked on, there are times when walking away from a relative is the healthiest and necessary choice to protect your well-being and peace.’ With that in mind, if you’re looking for signs it may be time to cut a relative out of your life, here are some to watch out for. Repeated crossing of boundaries If you try and set ground rules with a relative and they keep ignoring it, that’s a red flag. Billie says: ‘Boundaries within relationships teach others how we would like to be treated, what we are ok … [Read more...] about From boundary-crossing to abuse, these are signs it’s time to cut a relative out of your life
Almost 500 migrants cross Channel this weekend as total this year passes 8,000
Almost 500 migrants crossed the Channel over the weekend as the total this year rose above 8,000 despite the Rwanda deterrent. At least 300 people were picked up by Border Force vessels and RNLI lifeboats despite choppy conditions in the world’s busiest shipping lane on Sunday. Around 20 people, mainly men, were brought onto the beach at Dungeness while the majority were taken into the harbour at the Port of Dover. A mixture of men, women and some small children were brought into the safety of the harbour. One young British soldier aged in his 20s was seen carefully cradling a baby in his arms as a family disembarked a lifeboat. He carried the baby slowly up the walkway while her parents helped her older sister who was seen crying after she fell over on the gangway. The groups were taken onto coaches to be driven to the immigration processing centre at the former Manston airport. It comes after 167 in 13 boats made the crossing on Saturday - the first to attempt … [Read more...] about Almost 500 migrants cross Channel this weekend as total this year passes 8,000
Taranaki man who had sex with schoolgirl sentenced to home detention
A Taranaki man’s “positive steps” after racking up six convictions in less than a year, including having sex with a 15-year-old after she cried and refused, have seen him avoid prison. Between January and November last year, Rhys Raeburn Leatherby was charged with two counts of sexual connection with a young person aged 12 to 16, and unrelated charges of assault with intent to injure, speaking threateningly, driving with excess breath alcohol, and driving with excess breath alcohol third or subsequent. Earlier this year, Leatherby, 20, pleaded guilty to all of the charges, and he appeared before Judge Gregory Hikaka in the New Plymouth District Court for sentencing this week. The first charges, which Hikaka said were the “main concern”, arose in January and March, 2020.
