A NORTH Korean mum is making history by standing for election as a Tory councillor. Jihyun Park, 52, is the first defector to seek political office outside the Korean peninsula . The mum of three first fled the murderous regime — now headed by Kim Jong-un — after seeing loved ones starve to death. But Mrs Park was sold into slavery in China before being sent back in 1998, thrown into a notorious prison and tortured. When she suffered a horrific leg injury, she was booted out to die outside. Incredibly, Mrs Park escaped again through the mountains and desert in 2004 before the UN rescued her. Now, after settling in Prestwich, Greater Manchester, she hopes to represent Bury council. North Korean in diving gear swims through filthy drain across heavily defended border to defect to South, military says
A NORTH Korean man in full diving gear swam around the heavily fortified border with South Korea to defect. After swimming past the frontier, the man in his 20s crawled through a filthy drain beneath a barbed wire fence , South Korea's military have said. He was spotted after coming ashore in the early hours of the morning and was detained after a three hour hunt. His audacious escape saw him make it across the world’s most dangerous frontier which divides the two Koreas, who are technically still at war with each other. A huge fence separates the countries and the border is bristling with two million mines while North Korean soldiers ordered to shoot-to-kill any defectors. North Korean defector Jih-yun Park hopes to make history as Tory candidate in local elections
A North Korean defector is hoping to make history when she stands as a Conservative candidate in the UK's local elections in May. Jih-yun Park arrived in the country 13 years ago and will be on the Tory ballot in Bury, Greater Manchester . If she were to win in Moorside, which is a marginal ward, she would become the first known North Korean defector to hold political office outside Korea. After managing to make her way to China in 1998, she was eventually caught and returned to North Korea , where she was tortured. The 52-year-old escaped again and arrived in the UK in 2008 without being able to speak any English, but quickly settled into her new life with the help of the surrounding community, which she said gave her "lots of opportunities" and "happiness". US charges North Korean hackers with stealing and extorting more than $1.3bn
The United States has charged three North Korean men with stealing and extorting more than $1.3bn (£940m) from financial institutions and cryptocurrency exchanges around the world. "North Korea's operatives, using keyboards rather than guns, stealing digital wallets of cryptocurrency instead of sacks of cash, are the world's leading 21st century nation-state robbers," said John Demers, the US assistant attorney general.
