The Origin of Vibes
V ibes has become a ubiquitous word in the past half decade, one many people now reach for when describing the distinct emotion given off by a place, or a thing. It is the prevailing shorthand for a cultural atmosphere, mood, and zeitgeist. Vibe talk has also entered politics. In this magazine in 2021, Derek Thompson invited readers to think of politics as a “ vibes war .” This spring, again in these pages, David A. Graham argued that John Fetterman won the Democratic Senate primary for Pennsylvania less on policy than “ on vibes .” And Rolling Stone pronounced that Fetterman was “neither centrist nor a progressive. He’s a vibe.” To the political commentator Will Stancil , “‘vibes’ is the idea that politics is rooted in and governed by mass psychology, which makes political behavior intrinsically difficult (and sometimes impossible) to model as a series of quantifiable inputs and predictable outputs, the approach favored by econometrically-inclined disciplines.” In … [Read more...] about The Origin of Vibes
UK disputes lack of access to EU science research programmes
LONDON: Britain has launched dispute procedures with the European Union over its exclusion from the bloc's scientific research programmes, using a mechanism set out in a post-Brexit deal. These are the first such legal proceedings launched by the UK against the EU since Brexit. The UK government said that its inability to participate in science and technology programmes was causing "serious damage" both in the UK and EU countries. The British government said in a statement late Tuesday that it has launched action "set out in the UK-EU Trade and Cooperation Agreement (TCA) to resolve disputes between the UK and EU". European Commission spokesman Dan Ferrie confirmed the UK's request had been received, saying the Commission "will follow up on this in line with the applicable rules" according to the agreement. He said earlier that the EU would follow up, but there were "serious difficulties" since the post-Brexit trading accord does not oblige the EU to make the UK an associate … [Read more...] about UK disputes lack of access to EU science research programmes

Poland's conservative government has been criticised over a new school textbook that appears to disparage in vitro fertilisation (IVF) treatment. Opponents say the country's school curriculum is attempting to indoctrinate children with traditional ideologies. Poland’s governing Law and Justice party (PiS) has close ties to the Roman Catholic church and regularly promotes conservative social policies. Amid strict abortion laws, PiS has also ended a national programme that helped fund fertility treatments for couples. The country's education ministry has dismissed the latest criticism and pointed out that the controversial book in question does not directly refer to IVF. The government has also stressed that Polish teachers remain free to choose which textbooks to use for the next school year. What does the book say? The author of History and the Present says the controversial passage describes modern approaches to sexuality and childbearing. “Increasingly … [Read more...] about New Polish school textbook provokes anger over section on fertility
