Another heatwave is heading to the UK - exacerbating dry conditions that have already led to hosepipe bans in some parts of the country. Although temperatures will remain lower than the record-breaking highs of 40.3C (105F) seen last month, this latest hot spell is expected to last much longer. High pressure building across the UK could lead to temperatures of 35C (95F) - and the heatwave is expected to peak on Friday or Saturday. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued a heat-health alert lasting from Tuesday to Saturday. A level 3 alert is in place for southern England, and a level 2 for the North. Level 4 is the most serious designation. Advertisement The heat-health alerts are designed to help inform healthcare workers in England how to manage in high temperatures. NHS dentistry ‘at a tipping point’ as more than 90pc of practices refuse to take new patients
More than 90 per cent of NHS dental practices are refusing to take new patients, according to research. Between May and July, BBC researchers contacted more than 8,000 dental practices with an NHS contract to ask if they were taking on new patients. Across England 91% of NHS practices that responded were not accepting new adult patients (4,933 of 5,416), rising to 97% in the East Midlands, and 98% in the South West, North West and Yorkshire and the Humber. The situation was bleak for younger patients , with 79 per cent of NHS practices in England not accepting new child patients. Of those practices not taking on adults in England , 23% (1,124) said they had an open waiting list, and 16% (791) said the wait time was a year or longer, or were unable to say how long it would be. Out of 152 local authorities in England, the researchers were unable to contact any practices accepting new adult NHS patients in 56 (37 per cent) local authorities. The figures were released by … [Read more...] about NHS dentistry ‘at a tipping point’ as more than 90pc of practices refuse to take new patients

Britain really isn’t working – and the collapsing NHS is to blame
After lockdown raided the savings of hairdresser and gym instructor Lucie Wilby, a lengthy wait for a hip replacement dealt another blow to her family’s finances. “We’re in a lot of debt because of it and that’s a combination of Covid and obviously surgery [and] waiting times,” the 53-year-old mother from Cornwall says. “If I hadn’t had to wait six months, we’d be nowhere near this issue.” Like many of the 6.6 million people on an NHS waiting list, work had become painful and eventually impossible for Wilby as the backlog in treatment forces people to cut their hours or stop employment altogether. “By the time of the operation, I was barely walking and I’m self employed,” she says. “It took about three years to get diagnosed. That’s one of the major problems – it’s not just the waiting time for the operation once you’re on the list, it’s the waiting time for diagnosis.” While tax cuts and even trans issues may have stolen the limelight in the Tory leadership race, the … [Read more...] about Britain really isn’t working – and the collapsing NHS is to blame
Hundreds of Wellington first-home buyers who bought at market peak now in negative equity
KEVIN STENT/STUFF House price falls gathered pace in July, according to CoreLogic data, with Christchurch also going negative. Hundreds of first-home buyers in Wellington are estimated to now be in negative equity because of persistent price falls across the region, CoreLogic analysis shows. CoreLogic head of research Nick Goodall said an estimated 34% of first-home buyers who purchased in the capital during final quarter of 2021 were now in negative equity, with mortgages bigger than their homes were worth. In Upper Hutt the proportion was 48%, in Lower Hutt it was 43%, and in Porirua it was 31%. But Goodall said there should not be too much to worry about while the economy and labour market remained solid. DR MAX PEMBERTON: Trust me, fining NHS no-shows is doomed to failure
One of the things that has annoyed me most throughout my career is patients not turning up for appointments. I’m thoroughly sick of it — and I know many of my colleagues feel the same. It’s hard to describe the frustration of sitting in a clinic, waiting for a patient who’s failed to turn up, and not being able to get on with other work because they might suddenly appear, and all along knowing there are dozens of other patients who’d give their eye teeth for that appointment. So you’d think I’d welcome Rishi Sunak ’s plans to fine those people who don’t attend NHS appointments £10. It sounds, on the surface, like a good idea. Missed appointments cost the NHS huge sums of money each year. About £220 million is wasted through missed GP appointments and a total of about £1billion when hospital appointments are included. Elon Musk makes shock revelations about his ‘small’ $45k home & being drug tested after Tesla CEO countersues Twitter
ELON Musk has said he has moved into a small home that's worth $45,000 and claimed he was subjected to drug testing. It comes after the Tesla mogul countersued Twitter after they accused him of buying the social networking giant before trying to disrupt its operations. Musk revealed on The Full Send podcast that the home is located in Boca Chica, South Texas. He told host Kyle Forgeard that his friends come and stay at the property. He also revealed that he converted the garage so it is now a three-bed property. Musk's scandal-ridden dad Errol claimed earlier this week that his son lives a frugal life. He called into the Australian radio program The Kyle and Jackie O Show and sensationally revealed that he wasn’t proud of Elon, adding that the SpaceX founder's sibling Kimbal is his “pride and joy”. Errol said: “You know, we are a family that have been doing a lot of things for a long time, it’s not as if we suddenly started doing something.” Musk has a net … [Read more...] about Elon Musk makes shock revelations about his ‘small’ $45k home & being drug tested after Tesla CEO countersues Twitter
