Michael Owen has made his predictions for the final day of the Premier League season as Manchester City and Liverpool battle for the title and Leeds United and Burnley bid to avoid relegation. The English top-flight is set for a tense finale as title rivals Man City and Liverpool go into the last round of fixtures separated by just one point. Victory for Manchester City against Aston Villa would see Pep Guardiola ’s side win their fourth title in five years, but a slip-up would open the door to Liverpool, providing they beat Wolves. Leeds United will join Watford and Norwich City in the Championship next season if they lose to Brentford but a win or a draw will pull Burnley into the drop zone unless the Clarets pick up points against Newcastle United. The top-four battle is technically still alive but fifth-placed Arsenal need to beat Everton and hope north London rivals Tottenham lose to bottom-placed Norwich to sneak into fourth. Elsewhere, Manchester … [Read more...] about Michael Owen’s Premier League final day predictions including title race and relegation battle

Couple halve their monthly bills by ditching renting to live on a narrowboat
Like so many of us, couple Jack and Gemma Cox were struggling to get on the property ladder while spending a load of money on rent. So they took an unconventional approach: ditching renting and moving aboard a narrowboat instead. Jack, a 29-year-old secondary school teacher, and Gemma, a 29-year-old paramedic, were paying £1,000 a month (for rent and bills) to live in their flat in Manchester , all while trying to put as much money as they could into a Help To Buy ISA in the hopes of buying a place closer to Gemma’s family in the Dales. They realised that, looking at an average house price of £280,000, they faced years of strict saving just to be able to afford a property they might not even like. Rather than settling for that path, they binned off their ISA and bought a two-bed beam boat, moored between Manchester and Yorkshire. Their monthly outgoings have been halved as a result. Gemma said: ‘We took a loan out to buy the boat, and even still, the boat was … [Read more...] about Couple halve their monthly bills by ditching renting to live on a narrowboat
Can introducing a ‘fake commute’ into your day help productivity when working from home?
The pandemic has changed the way that many of us work, perhaps forever, with a huge portion of the population working from home for over two years now. While those of us able to carry out work from the comfort of our homes are very fortunate, and there are many upsides, there’s no denying that the lack of boundaries, natural routine and real-life contact with colleagues can be hard to navigate sometimes. But there are lots of things you can do to keep yourself motivated, productive – and, most importantly, stay sane. One of the most crucial is to make sure that you get out of the house and create routines. So, with that in mind, I decided to trial building in a ‘fake commute’ to my working day each morning, to see how it impacted my mood, productivity and general wellbeing. The idea is that I’d get up each day, shower, get dressed and go for a walk that would act as a replacement for the ‘commute’ part of my day, giving me a sense of routine – and a reason to … [Read more...] about Can introducing a ‘fake commute’ into your day help productivity when working from home?

How anxiety changes the way our brain sees the world (and how to reset it)
If you struggle with anxiety , you’ll know that it totally takes over your body and mind. When you’re overwhelmed by stress and worry, you can’t think straight. The worst-case scenario seems the most likely, and even the most preposterous fears feel entirely realistic. Anxiety legitimately changes how we view the world – and science backs this up. Albert Moukheiber, a clinical psychologist and neuroscientist, explores this in his new book, Your Brain Is Playing Tricks On You: How The Brain Shapes Opinions And Perceptions. One key area he breaks down is something called perception bias. ‘Anxiety is closely related to stress, which first and foremost is a physical reaction to a bodily danger,’ Albert tells Metro.co.uk. ‘That’s why we feel it primarily in our body which goes into a fight and flight reflex ‘But it also modulates how we perceive the world. For evolutionary reasons, our brain gets into a hypervigilance pattern (every tiny little detail become very … [Read more...] about How anxiety changes the way our brain sees the world (and how to reset it)
