Privatisation plan to give commuters faster internet
Rail chiefs are on the cusp of privatising thousands of miles of trackside phone lines in a move that will pave the way for commuters to get faster on-board internet coverage . Some 10,000 miles of phone cables running next to railway lines are to be sold off under proposals also intended to boost broadband speeds for millions of households. The winning investor will commit to upgrading the existing infrastructure and building 250 new mobile phone masts next to the tracks to help eradicate so-called 5G “notspots”. Officials launched an auction to sell off the phone lines a year ago, slapping a £1bn price tag on the sell-off. Two investment groups have now been selected to go into the final round. The first includes Neos, co-owned by SSE, the FTSE 100 energy giant, which is bidding in conjunction with Spanish firm Cellnex, one of Europe’s biggest telecoms companies, according to City sources. They will compete against a group that includes mobile phone company Nokia, … [Read more...] about Privatisation plan to give commuters faster internet
How LinkedIn became the new Facebook
“Embrace risk.” “It’s not rejection, it’s just redirection.” “Failure is an event, not a person.” If you’re in need of motivational work missives, LinkedIn might be your first destination. In among the job announcements, the newly published research papers and the requests for work or fresh talent, there is now a trend to post content with a more emotional bent: mood-boosting mantras, tales of rags to riches, intimate reveals of how to overcome mental health crises, and – in a development that is imbuing LinkedIn with shades of Facebook – increasing numbers of deeply personal announcements. Users are posting marriage photos, baby scans, coming-out announcements and tales of ill health. If the work/life merge is inevitable then it would appear LinkedIn is Ground Zero. “Personal LinkedIn posts have increased since the pandemic started,” says Rachael Rowland, who works in corporate HR, specifically diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI). “The pandemic triggered a desire for human … [Read more...] about How LinkedIn became the new Facebook
Prince Charles took more than 20 private flights within the UK ‘to avoid being stuck in traffic’
The Prince of Wales took more than 20 private flights, including several helicopters, within the UK last year in order to avoid being stuck in traffic, it has emerged. The heir to the throne is said to be “allergic” to travelling by helicopter, one of the most polluting modes of travel. However, the annual Sovereign Grant report revealed that he took several flights during the last financial year, including hopping between engagements in Northern Ireland and Wales and a 70-mile trip from London to RAF Brize Norton, in order to catch a charter flight to Jordan. The Prince and the Duchess of Cornwall also appear to have flown separately to Wales by helicopter from their respective homes, Highgrove in Gloucestershire and Ray Mill in Wiltshire. The couple took more than 15 charter flights, including to and from Belfast, and multiple journeys from residence to residence - including Glasgow to Northolt last July and Northolt to Marham to Aberdeen in December. ‘I need edgier love life but girlfriend is shy about group sex – I feel short-changed’
I need edgier sex. I need surprises, wickedness and peril. My girlfriend says she understands but feels embarrassed about buying sex toys, booking adult-only holidays – and taking part in group sex sessions. She begs me to give her more time, but I can feel the best years of my life passing me by. When do I get to start living? If I’m honest, I feel short-changed. READ MORE: Ex-tennis star Dylan Alcott uses discreet sex toy on girlfriend in restaurant All of my mates are enjoying very different experiences to me. Just the other day my oldest mate texted me to say that he and his partner were just back from a posh house event in London . Apparently, the tickets cost a fortune but it was worth it – the best thrill of his life. CONIFA World Cup: Representing Tibet, the country I fled
The first time Jamyang Chotso kicked a football was when she was 12. This was in a settlement for Tibetan refugees in Dharamshala, a hillside city in Northern India that is home to the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan government-in-exile. "I had no boots," says Chotso, reflecting on her early experiences of football. "We played on a dusty school ground." Now, at 25, Chotso is a central defender and captain of FC Tibet, the host team for the inaugural CONIFA World Cup for women, which features teams not recognized by global football's governing body, FIFA. Her journey from refugee to leader is a powerful story that echoes the profound struggles of so many Tibetans. Since 1950, Tibet has been ruled by China. Many Tibetans have fled to other countries for a better life. With the help of a guide, Chotso escaped at the age of eight. "I was too young to understand what was happening at the time," she tells DW, describing the night she left her family. "I didn't know why my parents … [Read more...] about CONIFA World Cup: Representing Tibet, the country I fled
