0 Have your say SNP Westminster leader Ian Blackford has given Jeremy Corbyn until the end of the day to bring a motion of no confidence in Theresa May’s government, or face being outflanked by other opposition parties. At a joint press conference with MPs supporting a referendum on the terms of Brexit, Mr Blackford said that “if Jeremy can’t… then we as the leaders of the other opposition parties must rise to that challenge”.Opposition parties said a vote of no confidence would pave the way to a so-called People’s Vote, but the Labour Party has said a motion to topple Mrs May will only be lodged when it is certain to pass the Commons. The row over tactics appears to be intensifying, with Labour pulling out of a planned meeting between Mr Corbyn and Mr Blackford over what it sees as SNP gameplaying, the Scotsman understands.READ MORE: Brexit: No renegotiation, EU Commission chief tells Theresa MayConservative MP Anna Soubry … [Read more...] about SNP-Labour talks cancelled in growing row over no-confidence vote

VA hospitals’ cancellations of diagnostic exam orders draw scrutiny
Donovan Slack USA TODAY Published 6:49 AM EDT Oct 1, 2018 IOWA CITY, Iowa – Radiology technologist Jeff Dettbarn said he knew something was wrong at the Department of Veterans Affairs hospital in Iowa City, Iowa, when a patient arrived in February 2017 for a CT scan, but the doctor’s order for it had been cancelled. “To have a patient show up for a scan and not have an order – you’re like, ‘What the heck is going on?’” he told USA TODAY in an interview. Dettbarn started collecting cancellation notices for diagnostic procedures such as CT scans, MRIs and ultrasounds. “I knew something was not right,” he said. “Because none of them were cancelled by a physician.” Cancellations of more than 250,000 radiology orders at VA hospitals across the country since 2016 have raised questions about whether – in a rush to clear out outdated and duplicative diagnostic orders – some facilities failed to follow … [Read more...] about VA hospitals’ cancellations of diagnostic exam orders draw scrutiny
The New York Times: Trump’s Cancellation of Pompeo Trip Dashes Hopes in South Korea
Source: Focus Information Agency Washington/Seoul. The past few days have been a roller-coaster ride for President Moon Jae-in of South Korea. On Thursday, the United States secretary of state, Mike Pompeo, announced that he would travel to Pyongyang, the North Korean capital, this coming week, raising hopes that the trip would make progress in talks over denuclearizing the North and provide the rationale for Mr. Moon to advance inter-Korean relations. Those hopes were quickly dashed barely a day later, however, when President Trump abruptly canceled Mr. Pompeo’s trip. To many South Koreans, the zigzag was another sign of Washington’s poor coordination in its North Korea policy, and it left Mr. Moon with a difficult choice, The New York Times writes. If Mr. Moon ignores Mr. Trump’s unhappiness with North Korea and pushes ahead with his plan to open South Korea’s first liaison office in the North as early as this coming week — as well as meeting … [Read more...] about The New York Times: Trump’s Cancellation of Pompeo Trip Dashes Hopes in South Korea

Spanish PM and Catalan premier meet in Madrid for first time in two years
Spain’s prime minister, Pedro Sánchez, is meeting with Catalan premier Quim Torra scheduled in a bid to start normalizing relations between Barcelona and Madrid. It is the first time in two years that a Catalan government leader has come to La Moncloa, the seat of the Spanish executive in Madrid. The Madrid premier thinks the meeting is “a mistake” because the Catalan government is “run by fanatics” The last such meeting held here was between Mariano Rajoy and Carles Puigdemont; the former was recently unseated by a no-confidence motion and has retired from politics, while the latter fled Spain to avoid being tried for rebellion after leading a unilateral independence bid. Following recent expressions of goodwill from both sides, the Monday meeting will test the limits of the current leaders’ commitment to dialogue. Sources at both executives admitted that the path towards a loyal and long-lasting collaboration is fraught with difficulty. … [Read more...] about Spanish PM and Catalan premier meet in Madrid for first time in two years
