September 3, 2018 Norwegians were streaming to cinemas all over the country this weekend, to see the latest film about a natural disaster on home turf in Oslo. It’s shaking up both them and local geologists, who disagree over whether there’s a real threat of a massive earthquake in a country that has never had one, but does have a history of rockslides and unstable mountains. The Oslo highrise office building known as Postgirobygget tips over and falls into the Oslo Plaza Hotel in the new disaster film Skjelvet, about an earthquake hitting Oslo. PHOTO: Fantefilm/Nordisk Film Distribusjon Called Skjelvet (The Quake), the film follows up on the wildly popular and highly acclaimed Norwegian disaster film from 2015, Bølgen (The Wave). It involved a tidal wave set off when a steep mountainside literally collapses into the Geiranger Fjord below. The use of real locations familiar to both locals and tourists alike has nurtured at least a sense of reality, and … [Read more...] about Latest disaster film shakes up geologists

British Media is not waving, it’s drowning…in a sea of its own mendacity
George Galloway was a member of the British Parliament for nearly 30 years. He presents TV and radio shows (including on RT). He is a film-maker, writer and a renowned orator. “Israel has taken out a contract on Jeremy Corbyn” writer Gideon Levy wrote in Ha'aretz. As the contract crescendos, what does it tell us about Corbyn, the media, and Israel? “The Jewish establishment in Britain and Israeli propaganda have taken out a contract on him (Corbyn), to foil his election…” Levy wrote in an opinion piece last week. This remarkable piece by Israel's finest journalist Gideon Levy, published in Israel's finest newspaper Ha'aretz, is remarkable not just in that it is a fine piece of writing on a par with what he writes every other day. Read more But it reminds those whose rushes of blood to the head too often lead them to erroneously believe that Israel is (not yet, at any rate) a "fascist" country. If it were, Levy would be dead, Ha'aretz long … [Read more...] about British Media is not waving, it’s drowning…in a sea of its own mendacity
‘I was there when the NHS was first founded – don’t call my generation heroes’
Like the dead, few speak ill of Britain’s past during World War Two or our post-war resurrection when we became, for a brief while, a nation for and by the people. We hold that era – especially the creation of the NHS – in a reverence that is almost religious in its piety for a time that many believe was better and more noble than today. In many ways, our placing this era onto a pedestal prevents us from solving the many catastrophes that pester Britain today: from Brexit to the refugee crisis, or the growing economic divide that threatens our democracy. We have been conditioned by our politicians, news media and films like Dunkirk or Their Finest to see the history of my generation as momentous and gallant, and those that followed in our wake as feckless and incapable of sacrifice. Anyone who has tried to keep a family alive, happy and emotionally nurtured, during the present time of austerity knows this to be untrue. My generation’s struggles have … [Read more...] about ‘I was there when the NHS was first founded – don’t call my generation heroes’
Rollercoaster riders stuck at top of Thorpe Park water-ride as temperatures soar
Adrenaline junkies were stuck at the top of a water ride as temperatures hit 30°C at Thorpe Park today. Instead of getting cooled off with a spray of water, the thrill seekers were sat at the top of Tidal Waves drop for around 10 minutes - as the queues continued to build. A witness who filmed the incident said: "Tidal Wave ride at Thorpe Park breaks down leaving riders stuck at the top in 30-degree heat. "They've been up there a good 20 minutes now with a member of staff climbing up then down; 120 minutes queues for the ride." And visitor Becky Thorpe tweeted the theme park to say: "I've now queued for 3 different rides that have broken while in the queue, and the rides we have been on all the staff are too busy flirting with each other that we ended up sitting on rush for 5 mins waiting to get off...ridiculous." While Paige added: "Will not be returning to @THORPEPARK for a veryyyyyy long time, most rides were shut at some point for long periods of times, all the refillable … [Read more...] about Rollercoaster riders stuck at top of Thorpe Park water-ride as temperatures soar
Thorpe Park thrill seekers stuck at top of rollercoaster in 30C sun ‘for 20 minutes’ as ‘multiple rides’ break down in heatwave
THORPE Park thrill-seekers were stuck at the top of a roller coaster in the blistering 30C heat for around 20 minutes this afternoon. Riders were stranded at the top of Tidal Wave ride at around 2pm, after "multiple rides" broke down. Visitors at the Chertsey theme park became irate after staff were "flirting with each other" instead of fixing the three different rides that had broken down. Footage from the Chertsey theme park shows a group of visitors appearing exhausted still as they wait for help. A witness who filmed the incident said: "Tidal Wave ride at Thorpe Park breaks down leaving riders stuck at the top in 30-degree heat. "They've been up there a good 20 minutes now with a member of staff climbing up then down; 120 minutes queues for the ride." A member of staff can be seen walking along the ride to try and solve the apparent mechanical issue. Complaining on Twitter, Rebecca Thorpe said: "I've now queued for 3 different rides that have broken while in the queue, and the … [Read more...] about Thorpe Park thrill seekers stuck at top of rollercoaster in 30C sun ‘for 20 minutes’ as ‘multiple rides’ break down in heatwave
