Russell Westbrook has been traded from the Oklahoma City Thunder to the Houston Rockets for Chris Paul and two first-round NBA draft picks, according to multiple reports Thursday. The Houston Chronicle and ESPN, each citing unnamed sources, reported the agreement, the latest blockbuster move in an NBA off-season of major relocations for NBA stars and huge lineup changes for many clubs. Eight-time All-Star Westbrook, the 2017 NBA Most Valuable Player, will be reunited with 2018 NBA MVP James Harden, his former Thunder teammate who was traded to the Rockets in 2012. Harden and Westbrook had wanted to reunite the backcourt tandem they enjoyed for three seasons with the Thunder. "It'll be very interesting and fun," Rockets owner Tilman Fertitta told Houston's Fox 26 TV. "James and Russell wanted to play together. "I said at the end of the year we're never going to stand pat. We're always going to try to get better. I think this makes us a better team. I hate to lose Chris Paul, but we felt … [Read more...] about Thunder trade Westbrook to Houston for Paul, picks: reports

NBA All-Star guard Russell Westbrook, who suddenly finds himself on a rebuilding Oklahoma City Thunder squad after they traded away Paul George, could be traded to the Houston Rockets, according to reports Sunday. The Rockets are interested in a deal for the point guard even though one source told ESPN it was a "longshot" because of the difficulty in making such a move, involving multiple other teams or obtaining talent the Thunder desire. The Athletic website also reported Houston's interest in Westbrook, saying that Miami and Detroit were hopefuls in making a deal for the versatile 30-year-old playmaker. Oklahoma City turned to rebuilding thoughts after George asked for a trade and the Los Angeles Clippers assembled a deal involving five first-round NBA Draft picks plus Italian forward Danilo Gallinari and Canadian point guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. The shock move completed early Saturday leaves Westbrook on a team looking to rebuild and likely looking for a trade deal himself. Dan Wolken USA TODAY Published 2:12 PM EDT Jul 6, 2019 Oklahoma City Thunder general manager Sam Presti is just 42, which might still qualify him for wonderboy status under different circumstances. But at this point in his life cycle as an NBA executive, you can only imagine he’s been aged in dog years. The chain of events that have led the Thunder from Presti’s would-be dynasty into a decomposing carcass of a contender aren’t entirely anyone’s fault. They probably weren’t even avoidable. But the moment is here for the Thunder in the wake of trading Paul George to the Los Angeles Clippers for promising guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and a mountain of draft assets: It’s time to part with Russell Westbrook, too. With Presti in charge, starting over has never been the goal for Oklahoma City. Even when the Thunder shipped James Harden to the Houston Rockets, even when Kevin Durant walked out the door, the mantra has been whatever it … [Read more...] about Opinion: Time for Thunder to jettison Russell Westbrook, rebuild
David Cobb Memphis Commercial Appeal Published 11:10 PM EDT May 31, 2019 Last Saturday in Maryland, three NBA teams attended a workout with a handful of prospects in their early 20s who recently completed standout college careers and are jockeying for an opportunity in the league. Towering among the group that day was a 32-year-old who understands some things now about being a professional that he wishes he had known when he was their age. Hasheem Thabeet cannot change his past, but the 7-foot-3 former Memphis Grizzlies center is bullish about his future in the NBA. "There’s so many things I believe I can do," Thabeet told The Commercial Appeal in a phone interview this week. Ten years removed from joining the Grizzlies as the No. 2 overall draft pick in 2009, Thabeet is determined to return to the NBA, even though he is five years removed from his last game in a league that has changed dramatically since he left. Jeff Zillgitt and AJ Neuharth-Keusch USA TODAY Published 9:34 AM EDT May 22, 2019 After last week's NBA draft lottery, we know the order that teams will make their picks. But we still have to wait a month to see who will go where. So until draft night on June 20, we're playing general manager and predicting the first round — which, after picks 1-3, could get interesting. Yes, Duke star Zion Williamson is, by all accounts, headed to the New Orleans Pelicans. Murray State's Ja Morant will probably go No. 2 to the Memphis Grizzlies, followed by Duke's R.J. Barrett to the New York Knicks. But then what? Here's how we see it all playing out. 1. New Orleans Pelicans: Zion Williamson • Duke • Freshman • Forward • 6-7 • 285 2. Memphis Grizzlies: Ja Morant • Murray State • Sophomore • Guard • 6-3 • 175 3. New York Knicks: R.J. … [Read more...] about NBA mock draft 2.0: Zion Williamson, then who?
