Let's face it, January can be pretty bleak. The festive season is well and truly behind us, we're back at work between paydays, the weather is miserable and summer holidays are still a speck on the horizons. We've even coined a name for what is supposedly the most depressing day of the year, Blue Monday, which fell on January 21 this year. But wallowing in misery isn't going to help anyone. So go ahead, spend one day in bed eating leftover Christmas chocolates and binge-watching your favourite Netflix show. But when that's over with, read these simple and easy ways you can feel cheery during these cold winter months: 1. Things which make you happy
Sudden death of Leicester owner Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha in tragic crash shows you must make most of life
WHEN we heard the news, we were all in shock. Last Saturday, less than 90 minutes after West Ham’s match at Leicester City, Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha and four other people on board his helicopter were killed suddenly in a crash. Their tragic passing has been a stark reminder not only of just how short life is, but how suddenly it can disappear. I have had a few personal reminders of this over the years. When I was in Parliament at the time of the Westminster terrorist attack last year, I really understood the saying about being in the wrong place at the wrong time. And trying to come to terms with the news that I had a potentially fatal brain aneurysm in 2006 was both terrifying and sobering. To many people, Leicester City owner Vichai, was the man who had everything — money, helicopters and a jet-set lifestyle. It’s easy to think people with lives like that are slightly more protected from everything, including death. But if you are in the wrong place at the wrong … [Read more...] about Sudden death of Leicester owner Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha in tragic crash shows you must make most of life

Love Island star Megan Barton Hanson’s £25k cosmetic surgery ‘won’t make her happy’ says Fiona Phillips
LOVE Island's Megan Barton Hanson has been warned by Fiona Phillips that cosmetic surgery "won't make her happy". The reality star, 24, spent a whopping £25k on enhancing her appearance before going on the hit ITV2 show. Earlier in the week, Megan likened having surgery to "having your hair done", something which has astounded Fiona. Speaking in her weekly column for the Mirror, the veteran TV star had this advice for the Love Island beauty: "Oh Megan. And there was I thinking I’d broken all beauty-enhancement records by getting my first set of highlights, aged 12, courtesy of my paper round earnings. "Megan is 24. Before she set foot on the Island she’d apparently spent £25,000 on two breast ops, lip fillers, a nose job and teeth veneers. "The result was Instagrammable perfection. Great for social media, but it doesn’t make for happiness. "It seems never a day goes by in these over-sharing times we don’t hear of a young person so bashed and … [Read more...] about Love Island star Megan Barton Hanson’s £25k cosmetic surgery ‘won’t make her happy’ says Fiona Phillips
Photoshopped images on social media offer us impossible beauty standards — it’s how you are that makes you happy
DID you see the photos of Jennifer Lopez on her 49th birthday looking unfeasibly gorgeous? Guess what? She is the same age as me. But that’s where the similarities stop. In fact physically, the only thing that is similar about our bodies are our toenails. But when I see pictures of her I don’t feel bad about myself or envious (on the contrary, I feel only admiration) because I know I have not put in any effort to look like that. I like cake too much, and I like going out with friends, having a drink, cooking and eating. And I am more than happy with my lot. The problem is, though, that a lot of women DO feel bad about themselves when they look at photos of beautiful women. They compare themselves and feel they don’t measure up; that they are lacking or worthless. This is especially an issue for young girls. A-Rod fails to dance like Jennifer Lopez as she shows off her dance moves at Bahamas beach Talking about body image this week, Loose Women presenter Nadia … [Read more...] about Photoshopped images on social media offer us impossible beauty standards — it’s how you are that makes you happy
