After the final round of formal talks between officials, the prime minister said a deal was "all there". But the prime minister said Brussels had to be "commonsensical" to get it across the line, with both sides setting an October deadline to settle their differences. EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen called for talks to "intensify". She is due to meet Mr Johnson on Saturday via video call to "take stock" of the situation and decide the next steps. Talks between chief negotiators Lord David Frost and Michel Barnier broke up earlier, without an agreement. Mr Barnier said "persistent serious divergences" remained between the two sides, while Lord Frost said … [Read more...] about Brexit: Trade deal with UK ‘up to EU’, says Boris Johnson

FASHION brands may be becoming more size-inclusive but this can sometimes be lacking, especially when it comes to celebrity or influencer collaborations. With Boohoo recently launching their summer collection in collaboration with actress Megan Fox, fashionistas were quick to wonder just how inclusive this range will be, and if it lives up to the hype. One fashion youtuber, Andrea Buller , ordered a haul of the collection to test just how well these clothes would fit someone with a midsize body. The first item she tried on was the premium mirror-disc mini dress , which she purchased for $100. The dress is currently on sale in the UK with 15% off at £59.50. The dress only comes in a small, medium, or large, with Andrea purchasing the large. “Please keep in mind, this goes for $100,” quips Andrea, before showing that the dress can’t even get over bust. In a 2011 Atlantic interview , Beverly Cleary shared what she believed to be the reason for her popularity: “I have stayed true to my own memories of childhood, which are not different in many ways from those of children today,” she said. “I don’t think children’s inner feelings have changed.” Cleary seems to have been right about that. The author, who died last week, drew from intense memories of her own early life to write about kids with rare understanding and care. She understood—and respected—children’s inner feelings. Many saw their own awkward experiences reflected in those of Cleary’s characters; they felt heard by her words. For my colleague Sophie Gilbert , the author’s depiction of mortification stood out the most. Learning that she was not alone in even her most humiliating moments, Gilbert writes, was one of the most potent lessons of Cleary’s work. Many of the best children’s books work like this—by helping kids identify difficult emotions and then work through … [Read more...] about The Books Briefing: Beverly Cleary Saw Kids as They Are
In “ The Rise of Victimhood Culture ,” I described the work of sociologists Bradley Campbell and Jason Manning, who argued that the United States made the transition from an honor culture to a dignity culture in the 18th and 19th Centuries, and that we’re now seeing the rise of what they dubbed “a culture of victimhood.” They argued that it is characterized by: ...concern with status and sensitivity to slight combined with a heavy reliance on third parties. People are intolerant of insults, even if unintentional, and react by bringing them to the attention of authorities or to the public at large. Domination is the main form of deviance, and victimization a way of attracting sympathy, so rather than emphasize either their strength or inner worth, the aggrieved emphasize their oppression and social marginalization. Among those who read the article, one of the most common objections was to the name “victimhood culture.” Here I want to publish some of those reader emails––and … [Read more...] about Is ‘Victimhood Culture’ a Fair Description?
When Kate Garraway left the I'm A Celebrity jungle in December 2019, the first thing she and husband Derek Draper planned to do was renew their vows. But fate had other ideas in store, and as the world locked down the following March amidst the Covid pandemic , the couple - who celebrate their 17th wedding anniversary today - both took ill with the virus. For GMB host Kate, 55, the illness was relatively mild, but for Derek, also 55, things quickly took a serious turn and he was rushed to hospital with breathing difficulties. There, he was transferred to intensive care where doctors put him in a coma. Kate - who had to stay at home isolating with their children Darcey, 16, and William, 13 - was told to prepare for the worst and at one point endured a 24-hour wait to find out if he was dead.
