Screen time more dangerous for children than activities in Swallows and Amazons, warn academics
Spending hours staring at screens is a more dangerous pastime than the perilous activities carried out by the children in Swallows and Amazons , academics have said. The author of the first ever full-length study of Arthur Ransome’s classic adventure novel claims too much time surfing the net is far more deadly than sailing at night without a life jacket, because it fails to teach children how to fend for themselves or take risks. Julian Lovelock, the former dean of arts and pro vice-chancellor of the University of Buckingham , where he lectured on Ransome, said children were spending increasing amounts of time using "gadgets and gizmos" and were not living in the real world. “Sailing at night without life-jackets, wrecking their dinghy through a foolhardy misjudgement, crossing the stormy North Sea in a small boat, confronting the urban Hullaballoos: today’s health and safety police would have had apoplexy," he said. "But it’s worth pondering whether the challenges … [Read more...] about Screen time more dangerous for children than activities in Swallows and Amazons, warn academics

I gave birth in my bathtub – I wouldn’t have had it any other way
When I first fell pregnant with my daughter Daisy, I imagined myself giving birth inside a hospital or birthing centre, like most people I knew. It just seemed like the done thing. But then the pandemic worsened, and I began to hear stories of birth partners being banned from labour wards. Rich, my fiancé (now husband), had already had to miss all my scans and appointments because of Covid and that had been tough. I’d had some bleeding at the start of my pregnancy, when we’d been told by a midwife that there was a 50% chance of losing the baby in the first trimester. Lying on the bed waiting for the scan technician to tell me everything was fine was even more nerve-wracking without Rich there. After going through that, doing what I’d heard was one of the most intense experiences possible without the support of someone I love did not appeal. So, I rented out an inflatable birthing pool from the charity Hackney Home Birth and started planning to give birth to my … [Read more...] about I gave birth in my bathtub – I wouldn’t have had it any other way

I took my parents to their first Pride – it made me feel invincible
As the Dykes on Bikes rumbled past, my mum and dad – sporting ‘Proud LGBTQ Parents’ T-shirts – were whooping, clapping and enthusiastically waving their flags. When I looked over and saw this all unfolding, I felt a unique sense of euphoria. If you had told me when I was 18 that I would take my parents to a Pride parade as an out and proud lesbian and they would wave their rainbow flags with the best of them, I never would have believed you. That, however, is exactly what happened on 2 July when myself, my parents, girlfriend and best friend went to Pride in London , an event that marked 50 years since the first pride parade in 1972. I knew I was gay from a very young age, but because of a lack of representation, I did not have the language or knowledge to understand my feelings. I was incredibly drawn to Aurora from Sleeping Beauty and – at the time – I just thought she was my very favourite Disney princess. Since my celebrity crushes today are Cara Delevingne, … [Read more...] about I took my parents to their first Pride – it made me feel invincible
