Bear cub gets high on trippy honey and has a long, hard think about things
Hallucinogens have the potential to expand the mind, open new dimensions and reveal the deepest secrets of an infinite cosmos – or they can turn you into an absolute mess. This young bear cub learned the hard way that the road to spiritual enlightenment may not lie in psyche-bending substances after all. The cub was found high as a kite in Turkey after gorging itself on a type of honey that can make animals trip balls. She appears to have snaffled up a heavy dose of ‘mad honey’, known as ‘deli bal’ in Turkish. The wavy substance, which is produced by rhododendrons, transformed the honey hungry bear from Winnie the Pooh into a classic Glastonbury casualty (if a little furrier). Rescuers found her staggering around a rural part of Duzce province earlier today looking like she’d just wandered bleary-eyed out of a 1960s squat. The bear was loaded onto the back of a truck, where she managed to get sat upright and looked like she might be having a good think about the … [Read more...] about Bear cub gets high on trippy honey and has a long, hard think about things
Gwyneth Paltrow under fire for saying kids of celebs “work twice as hard”
Gwyneth Paltrow is under fire for saying children of celebrities have to "work twice as hard" to prove themselves. On Wednesday, July 27, the Goop founder , 49, appeared on an episode of Hailey Bieber 's vlog "Who's in My Bathroom" and discussed her experience growing up with famous parents. Paltrow is the daughter of actress Blythe Danner and late director Bruce Paltrow. She is also the god-daughter of Steven Spielberg . "As the child of someone, you get access other people don't have, so the playing field is not level in that way," she told the Rhode founder , 25. "However, I really do feel that once your foot is in the door, which you unfairly got in, then you almost have to work twice as hard and be twice as good." The Shallow Hal actress explained, "Because people are ready to pull you down and say, 'You don't belong there,' or, 'You are only there because of your dad or your mom.'" Fans were quick to share their thoughts on Twitter , with one person writing, … [Read more...] about Gwyneth Paltrow under fire for saying kids of celebs “work twice as hard”
In Opinion: Hard evidence that Putin is targeting Syrian civilians
This article was first published on the Atlantic Council site . Since their start at the end of September 2015, Russian airstrikes have displaced over a quarter million Syrians. According to Amnesty International, civilian harm attributable to Russia is on the rise . "We ran for our lives. We didn't get to take anything with us. No blankets, nothing," said Fatima, who fled Kafr Nboudha in Hama governorate to a makeshift camp called Jabal Harem on the Syrian side of the Turkish border. With borders more tightly sealed than ever before, temperatures dipping to 23°F and airstrikes continuing, newly displaced Syrians have nowhere to go. As one U.N. official told me, "Every day there is a new displacement…new arrivals…new needs." Kafr Nboudha is a town that experienced relative calm until three months ago when squadrons of Russian jet fighters began bombarding it. "It seems like the Russians are finishing the job that the [Syrian] regime started in 2011," said Abu Qusai, a … [Read more...] about In Opinion: Hard evidence that Putin is targeting Syrian civilians
No relief for hard-hit families as fat cat energy bosses and No 10 fail to find solution at crisis summit
HARD-UP families suffered another blow today as fat cat energy bosses and the government failed to find a solution to soaring electricity prices. With energy bills predicted to hit a staggering £5,000 next year, a roundtable discussion between industry and the government was held at No10. Boris Johnson, Chancellor Nadhim Zahawi and Energy Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng were all present. Together they urged energy bosses to "act in the interest of the country" as prices rocket, in part because of the war in Ukraine. But no major policy decisions, such as a second windfall tax, were made. Despite calls for immediate action, the PM repeated his view that any further interventions will be up to his replacement. Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak agree that it should be for one of them to decide what happens next. Tories can no longer avoid telling hard truths about the route out of this mess
A few months back I wandered into the second-hand bookshop of a National Trust property. It confounded the modern reputation of the Trust by having on display a copy of Let our Children Grow Tall , a collection of Margaret Thatcher’s speeches from the late 1970s. They are of remarkable depth and length. Although we can well do without most aspects of the 1970s in our modern politics, it would be good to recover the ability to set out political ideas in a non-trivial way. I do not suggest that these speeches should be the basis for a modern political programme nearly 50 years later. As Mrs Thatcher herself said: “Every generation must restate its values in the light of present challenges and of past experience.” What they do show, however, is the effort she felt she needed to put into explaining her ideas. In retrospect, it seems obvious that by the late 1970s the post-war consensus had run out of road. It wasn’t so clear at the time. The consensus set the intellectual climate. … [Read more...] about Tories can no longer avoid telling hard truths about the route out of this mess
It’s not easy managing the Mississippi River: Photo book shows just how hard it is
If the only time you encounter the Mississippi River is when crossing it via a bridge or ferry, it's easy to ignore how much work has gone into managing the mighty waterway. A new book gives a highly visual perspective on that effort. "The US Army Corps of Engineers on the Mississippi River," (Arcadia Publishing, $21.99) by Damon Manders, a historian who has written often about the Corps, shows more than tells. There are 223 Corps photos, maps and drawings on 127 about two centuries of attempts to tame North America's biggest river. The Mississippi, to say the least, hasn't always cooperated, as the photos also show. The 1927 flood, arguably the most devastating natural disaster in U.S. history, gets the longest chapter in the book. Although the effect would be more vivid if the photos were larger — the book's 6½-by-9-inch format is limiting — they show how the flood ravaged much of the nation's heartland, including tributaries miles from the main river itself. But, while … [Read more...] about It’s not easy managing the Mississippi River: Photo book shows just how hard it is
Bob Blizzard, jazz-loving Labour MP who fought hard for Britain’s fishing industry and for his Suffolk constituency – obituary
Bob Blizzard, who has died aged 71, was Labour MP for the traditionally Tory constituency of Waveney in Suffolk from 1997 to 2010, having led the local council for six years. He resigned as PPS to the work and pensions minister Nick Brown in 2003 in protest at the Iraq War, but later served under Gordon Brown – to whom he was closer politically than to Tony Blair – as a government whip. Described by AA Gill in The Sunday Times as “like a day-old heifer bumping into things”, the Suffolk-born Blizzard campaigned fervently for a better deal for his constituency. He complained soon after his election that it was starved of economic development because of its “horrendously inadequate” transport infrastructure. Blizzard set up Lowestoft 2000, a partnership with businesses to promote the town, and secured improvements to traffic bottlenecks. His campaigning for a third bridge out of the town across Lake Lothing paid off after he lost his seat in 2010; the “Gull Wing” bridge is set to … [Read more...] about Bob Blizzard, jazz-loving Labour MP who fought hard for Britain’s fishing industry and for his Suffolk constituency – obituary
