Britain to commit 2,000 extra troops to Estonia as Nato ramps up defence
Britain will commit an extra 2,000 soldiers to defending Estonia under new Nato plans , the Defence Secretary has announced. Speaking at the Nato summit in Madrid, Ben Wallace said that the existing battlegroup deployment of about 900 soldiers would be permanently increased to brigade strength, taking the total committed force to about 3,000 troops in all. Not all units are expected to be based in the Baltic country at the same time, with some troops held on standby in the UK. Numbers in Estonia will be increased only in the event of heightened tensions with Russia, although the headquarters element is expected to be permanently stationed forward. Mr Wallace said: “If your brigade headquarters is forward and you have a battlegroup in the position, it is very quick to surge … and allows us to very quickly expand to three battlegroups”. “How forward and permanent we’ll be there… will all be worked out in [Nato’s] regional plans between now and Christmas. We stand … [Read more...] about Britain to commit 2,000 extra troops to Estonia as Nato ramps up defence

Nato forces to increase sevenfold with 300,000 troops on high alert
Nato is set to massively increase its available forces on high alert to more than 300,000 troops in the most significant overhaul of the alliance’s defence strategy since the Cold War. In a historic policy shift, Jens Stoltenberg, its secretary-general, said the alliance would also genuinely fortify the border with Russia to fully defend allied territory in a response to Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine . “We will transform the Nato response force and increase the number of our high readiness forces to well over 300,000,” he told reporters ahead of a crunch summit in Madrid. “Russia has walked away from the partnership and the dialogue that Nato has tried to establish with Russia for many years,” Mr Stoltenberg added. “They have chosen confrontation instead of dialogue. We regret that – but of course, then we need to respond to that reality.” As part of the pledge, Boris Johnson will announce “significant reinforcement” for Estonia, potentially more than doubling the number … [Read more...] about Nato forces to increase sevenfold with 300,000 troops on high alert
Christchurch Airport expecting 20,000 passengers a day at school holiday peak
Christchurch Airport is expecting up to 20,000 passengers a day during the upcoming school holiday break as international services resume and regional schedules return to how they were pre-pandemic. Justin Watson, the airport’s chief aeronautical and commercial officer, said the three Fridays of the school holidays – July 8, 15, and 22 – would be especially busy. The holiday period runs from July 9 to July 24. Watson suggested travellers allow slightly more time to get through the airport and that they book their car-parking online, as spots fill quickly. There was a buzz around the terminal and international services were back in action, he said. Drivers could be hit by £1,000 fines for making commonly used ‘thank you gestures’
The old saying goes that "good manners cost nothing". But that simply isn't true on the UK's roads . Quite the contrary, in fact, as it turns out that politely thanking fellow motorists while driving could result in a large fine, according to the Highway Code. It has become customary in the UK for drivers to show their gratitude to fellow motorists whenever they carry out a favour like allowing them into a junction or lane or stopping to let them pass safely. Drivers will often display their appreciation to each other by waving to their counterpart or flashing their headlights. Using the hazards to thank another driver could result in a hefty fine ( Image: Getty Images/iStockphoto) Almost a third (29.1 per cent) of motorists choose to say "thank you" on the roads by waving, a survey by National Tyres and Autocare found. The research showed that around one in five (21.2 per cent) prefer to flash their headlights. Some 17.5 per cent said they like to flash … [Read more...] about Drivers could be hit by £1,000 fines for making commonly used ‘thank you gestures’
West Aucklanders face $20,000 fine for walking dogs in bush closed over kauri dieback
LAWRENCE SMITH/Stuff Park rangers and contractors are working to reopen the Kitekite track in the wake of the kauri dieback track closures (video first published December 2018). Residents who live near a West Auckland bush track closed because of kauri dieback have been threatened with a $20,000 fine if they enter it. Auckland Council sent letters to residents of Tainui Rd and Manuka Rd on March 15 after its monitoring system showed a small group of people were continuously breaching the closure of the Clark Bush Track. The track is one of 29 closed since 2018 in an effort to reduce the risks associated with the spread of kauri dieback disease in the forest. The council said it had strong indication the culprits were locals, using the track to walk their dogs. Boris and Rishi announce £6,000,000,000 cost-of-living tax cut
Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak have told Brits the government is ‘on your side’ when it comes to the spiralling cost-of-living crisis. But with food and petrol prices reaching fresh highs, plunging millions into financial distress, some might find their assurances hard to stomach. In an op-ed for the Sun on Sunday , the prime minister and chancellor outlined what they are calling ‘the single biggest tax cut in a decade’, worth £6 billion. Their measures include ‘a council tax rebate, a cut in fuel duty, at least £400 for every household to help with energy bills and at least £1,200 for the eight million most vulnerable households’. Mr Johnson and Mr Sunak said that when the National Insurance (NI) threshold rises this Wednesday from £9,880 to £12,570, it will save up to £330 a year for 30 million people. They claim the change will lift 2.2 million people out of paying any NI or income tax on their earnings. ‘We know it’s tough but we want you to know that … [Read more...] about Boris and Rishi announce £6,000,000,000 cost-of-living tax cut
