A COUPLE was devastated when P&O cancelled their £3,000 cruise to the Canary Islands just a month in advance - now they're going to Blackpool instead. Claire and Keith Bromley from Silverdale, Lancashire , had been counting down the days until their two-week getaway at the end of August, but their holiday plans have quickly unravelled. The pair splashed out on the dream destination last year, so were heartbroken to receive the bad news from P&O Cruises just weeks before the departure date. Yet they were even more shocked when they found out the reason for the sudden cancellation. P&O Cruises booted the Bromley's out of the cabin they had booked to use it as a Covid isolation room instead. The firm has apologised to the couple for their "Covid protocols", but the pair are utterly disappointed by their actions. What Russia got right about the coronavirus—and what it can share with the world | Opinion
Since the start of the coronavirus crisis, Russia had received criticism in international media over its response to the pandemic. In reality, the country is setting an example others can learn from in many vital areas. Russia is one of the global leaders in testing for the virus, in producing efficient drugs and it is rapidly approaching mass production of its own vaccine. The Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF), the country's sovereign wealth fund, has played a key role in fighting the virus in Russia. We learned about the threat in late January from our network of international partners, advised the government in its assessment of it and moved ahead with investment. With countries like the United States predicted to reach a staggering 100,000 cases a day, it is important that we quickly develop focused solutions based on proven technologies with no time to spare. We believe that RDIF has now developed key elements of such a practical solution. Working jointly with some of … [Read more...] about What Russia got right about the coronavirus—and what it can share with the world | Opinion

The drastic plans Donald Trump is already promising for a second term as president
ANALYSIS: For the first time since leaving office, former US president Donald Trump has started getting specific about what he would do if he wins a second term in the White House. The pitches he's made onstage over the past month in speeches from Washington, DC, to Dallas to Las Vegas are a stark contrast from ordinary stump speeches. He promises a break from American history if elected, with a federal government stacked with loyalists and unleashed to harm his perceived enemies. There has never been a potential candidate like Trump : a defeated former president whose followers attacked the Capitol, who still insists he never lost, and who openly pledges revenge on those he views as having wronged him. As his 2016 campaign and administration showed time and again, from the border wall to the Muslim ban, he and his aides worked furiously to translate rally slogans into official policy - whether or not there were legal or political barriers to overcome. And if Trump does … [Read more...] about The drastic plans Donald Trump is already promising for a second term as president

Spokesman Ivan Nechaev told a news briefing on Thursday that the proposals were "unacceptable". UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, who is visiting Ukraine, is due to meet the Ukrainian and Turkish presidents, Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Recep Tayyip Erdogan, in the western city of Lviv. The leaders are expected to discuss ways to find a political solution to the war and address the threat to global food supplies as well as the risk of a disaster at Zaporizhzhia, which was taken over by Russian forces in March. In his nightly video address on Wednesday, President Zelenskyy reaffirmed his demand for the Russian military to leave the plant, emphasising that “only absolute transparency and control of the … [Read more...] about Ukraine war: Russia rejects Zaporizhzhia demilitarisation, UN chief in Lviv, Kharkiv bombardment

Weather stations underpin effective climate action—We need more of them | Opinion
Weather forecasts save lives. Every year, millions of people are evacuated to safety thanks to early-warning systems that can predict the path of a hurricane, the intensity of floods and the risk of wildfires. But weather systems are becoming more erratic. Climate change has increased both the severity and the frequency of extreme weather. We need more accurate and timely data to understand how our weather systems are changing—data that is needed to continue saving lives. Yet the global map of weather stations looks much like our planet at night: The brightly lit conurbations of Europe and North America show in sharp contrast to the darkness engulfing Africa and much of Latin America, polar regions and the vast expanse of our oceans. What is more, those dark, data-less regions have got darker as investment in the upkeep of weather stations has dried up , particularly during the pandemic. The shortfall in weather data undermines the science that underpins early warning systems and … [Read more...] about Weather stations underpin effective climate action—We need more of them | Opinion

Follow today's live court action R yan Giggs's ex-girlfriend has revealed that she lied to the former footballer about having cancerous cells detected in a smear test so that she "would not have to have sex with him". In late October 2020, just days before an alleged headbutt at the centre of the trial, Kate Greville, 36, told a friend she was going to end her contraception in secret. The ex-footballer responded in shock, and asked her what exactly the test had shown, to which she responded "high-grade dyskaryosis". Chris Daw QC, for the defence, said that the pair continued to have "regular and enthusiastic sex" aftwerwards, and referring to the contraceptive coil that Ms Greville was getting removed without letting her then boyfriend know, "Your plan was to get pregnant by Mr Giggs, wasn’t it?
