Arsenal recover from poor start to stun injury-hit Leicester as Harvey Barnes faces six weeks out
A n hour before kick-off, Mikel Arteta stood accused of gambling with his Premier League season by playing a weakened team and risking a defeat which would have left Arsenal as a speck in Brendan Rodgers’ wing-mirrors. Perhaps Arteta does know what he is doing after all. Arsenal’s hopes of Champions League football next season may still depend on winning the Europa League, but this proved that they are in there fighting. Bukayo Saka, their frequent inspiration, was not even required to come off the bench, while Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang played only the final six minutes, as Arsenal secured a deserved victory. This will provide Arteta with huge encouragement for the final months, as Arsenal proved they can win without two of the key men who have carried them so many times this season. The maligned Willian produced arguably his best performance for the club yet, while Nicolas Pepe was also excellent. Arsenal’s hopes of a top-four finish remain remote but at least they proved … [Read more...] about Arsenal recover from poor start to stun injury-hit Leicester as Harvey Barnes faces six weeks out
‘I tried to take my life after Dunblane horror – but now I have my happy family’
It was an ordinary Wednesday morning when I woke up on 13 March, 1996. It was snowing and I shivered as I pulled on my red school uniform sweater. We’d moved to Scotland three years earlier – my mum, my stepdad and my 11-year-old brother Joe. I loved my school. I was a happy-go-lucky kid and very settled. Dunblane was a safe, close-knit community. Neighbours were friendly and Joe and I had the freedom to play in the park and walk to school by ourselves. After we’d waved Mum goodbye at home, we walked the short distance to school and Joe went off to his class, which was in a prefab structure on the site, and I went to mine, Primary Four, which was a classroom in the main building. The school had a large gym in the middle and a big field at the back. It was coming up to 9.30am and our class was walking through a corridor to the music room, called the “GP room”, to practise singing for a big assembly later that week. But something wasn’t right. I was standing next to my … [Read more...] about ‘I tried to take my life after Dunblane horror – but now I have my happy family’
Queen stresses importance of staying in touch with family during ‘testing times’
The Queen has stressed the importance of staying in touch with family and friends during "testing times" in a message broadcast hours ahead of the Sussexes' Oprah interview. Senior royals including the Prince of Wales and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge joined forces to appear in the special BBC One programme on Sunday to mark Commonwealth Day, as the bitter fallout from Megxit continued. The Queen's audio message celebrated collaboration, but stood in contrast to the troubles facing the royal family. Focusing on the global impact of the coronavirus pandemic, the monarch spoke of using technology that "transcends boundaries or division" and how there has been a "deeper appreciation" of the need to connect to others during the Covid-19 crisis. She also praised the "selfless dedication to duty" seen across the Commonwealth, particularly on the front line. Do you enjoy reading about the royal family? Essex Boys' killer Jack Whomes has been freed from prison after being cleared for release by the Parole Board. Whomes, 59, was given three life sentences in 1998 and told to serve at least 23 years. He's now free and has returned to live with his mum after winning a Parole Board hearing, the Mirror understands. Whomes is understood to be on licence while working as a mechanic and living with his mother in Suffolk. Whomes and his friend Michael Steele, now 76, were found guilty of shooting drug dealers Tony Tucker, 38, Pat Tate, 37 and Craig Rolfe, 26, in a Range Rover in Rettendon, Essex, in 1995. They were thought to have supplied the ecstasy taken by Leah Betts, 18, who died three weeks earlier. Whomes’ mum Pam told the Sun on Sunday : “Jack is out and is doing OK and has a good job.” Brother John, 58, a retired builder, added: “We are over the moon that Jack is home and with his mum, which is what he has always wanted. “But we are still fighting to clear Jack’s … [Read more...] about Essex boys’ killer Jack Whomes freed from prison 23 years after life sentence
