The Green Party have elected two new leaders, and they have big ambitions for the future of the party. Jonathan Bartley and Sian Berry were elected by a landslide in a ballot of members, the party announced today. It means the Greens in England and Wales will continue with a joint leadership, after Mr Bartley and the party's only MP Caroline Lucas shared the helm for the past two years. The pair easily saw off challenges from rivals, scooping 6,239 of the 8,379 votes cast, against 1,466 for Shahrar Ali and 495 for Leslie Rowe. Amelia Womack was re-elected for a third term as deputy leader, taking 3,981 out of 7,369 votes. The new co-leaders pledged to put the party on course to supplant the Liberal Democrats and Scottish National Party to claim the title of "the third political party in Britain", and said they aim to get a Green into every council chamber. Cllr Berry, who is also a member of the London Assembly, won alongside her running-mate Jonathan Bartley.The 44-year-old was previously leader of the party, in the principle speaker role, between 2006 and 2007. The Green Party held a two-day conference over the weekend. Co-leader Marama Davidson announced that the Government would be considering a "water-test" on foreign land sales. This would give the Government the ability to halt a land sale to a water bottling company solely because of concerns over the implications for water - something Conservation Minister Eugenie Sage found she was not able to legally do earlier this year. David Seymour tried to take a dig at the Green Party on Wednesday, but ended up digging a hole for himself instead. The ACT leader tweeted a photo of himself taking the bus to Parliament just after 9:30am, along with a snarky comment aimed at the environmentally-focused party.
