One year on from the Trump inauguration, in the shadow of the global #MeToo movement and in the week the BBC broadcast a Panorama documentary where 20 women shared their stories accusing Trump of sexually harassing them, it is indeed extraordinary that Trump is finally in the UK. On Thursday evening in a sun soaked Oxfordshire village opposite and around the gates of Blenheim Palace, the birth place of Winston Churchill, thousands of protesters gathered to give Donald Trump a very British welcome and a taste of the ‘carnival of resistance’ expected on the streets of central London today. Those gathered outside Blenheim were by no means the usual suspects. Many first-time protesters arrived with their handmade placards. Among them were a large, and very visible, number of girls and women of all ages calling out Trump for his misogyny and his administration’s policies rolling back women’s reproductive and human rights. A group of women came to … [Read more...] about Women Are Protesting Trump Today On Behalf Of The Global Sisterhood
The global gag rule
Abortion remains one of the most controversial political and social issues in the United States. While on the surface the debate is about anti-abortion law, what lays just beneath the surface is a larger narrative about access to health care and reproductive rights for women. Pro-life advocates in the states are currently encouraging the Trump Administration to cut taxpayer funding for Planned Parenthood, a large, national nonprofit organisation that provides health care services to families, including referrals to doctors who perform abortions. Some states are also taking legislative action against abortion. Earlier this month, Gov. Kim Reynolds of Iowa signed into law a ban on abortions when a fetal heartbeat can be detected. The law effectively bans most abortions in the state, making it the strictest abortion ban in the country, and many people see this ban as a first step toward making abortion in the States illegal again. In response, Planned Parenthood of the Heartland and … [Read more...] about Will abortion become illegal in the United States?
In a speech to pro-life supporters, Donald Trump veered off script by refusing to say electing Republicans in the midterms was as important as voting for him in 2016. The US president, who was speaking at the annual “Campaign for Life Gala”, initially warned the audience they must show up at the polls to preserve the gains made under his administration. “Every day between now and November we must work together to elect more lawmakers who share our values, cherish our heritage, and proudly stand for life,” Mr Trump said. He summed it up for the roomful of enthusiastic supporters: “The story is, '18 midterms, we need Republicans.” Read more Donald Trump's UK visit may be extended so he can play golf Surge in deadly miners' lung disease as Trump aims to push coal output Jimmy Carter says Trump could win the Nobel Peace Prize The president promised a “massive campaign” to assist Republicans this autumn, and … [Read more...] about Midterms 2018: Trump refuses to put party before himself in scripted speech, ‘I don’t know who the hell wrote that line’

Donald Trump’s administration will reinstate a decades-old policy that will strip federal funds from family planning clinics providing abortion or related services, marking its latest salvo to curtail women’s reproductive rights. The Department of Health and Human Services will announce the proposal on Friday, an administration official confirmed to the Guardian. The move would revive a policy first implemented by Ronald Reagan in 1988, which effectively barred reproductive health organizations that received federal grants from providing or even discussing abortion with patients. The policy has been derided as a “gag rule” by abortion rights supporters and medical groups, and it is likely to trigger lawsuits that could keep it from taking effect. “This is an attempt to take away women’s basic rights, period,” Dawn Laguens, the executive vice-president of Planned Parenthood Federation of America, said in a statement. She added: “Everyone … [Read more...] about Trump administration to revive Reagan-era abortion ‘gag’ rule
