Bob Nightengale USA TODAY Published 5:58 PM EST Jan 3, 2019 Maybe, just maybe, Bryce Harper won’t get a dime more than the contract he turned down three-and-a-half months ago from the Washington Nationals. Perhaps that $300 million won’t be deposited into Manny Machado’s bank account, either. Here we are, only six weeks before the start of spring training, and neither are remotely close to signing. However, the Chicago White Sox, who along with the Philadelphia Phillies are the only teams to publicly express interest in both players, have formally offered Machado a long-term contract proposal, four persons with direct knowledge of the offer told USA TODAY Sports. They spoke only on the condition of anonymity since they are in the middle of negotiations. It’s characterized as a serious offer, likely closer to $200 million than $300 million, but not enough to sway Machado to board a flight from Miami to Chicago for a press conference. White Sox prospect Nick Madrigal begins pro career
The White Sox have another prospect to watch. A week ago, Nick Madrigal was clutching the championship trophy after Oregon State ousted Arkansas in the College World Series. On Thursday, the 21-year-old infielder was ready to embark on his professional career after signing a minor league contract with the Sox and banking a $6,411,400 signing bonus. “Ever since the draft, I tried to stay focused with our college season and let that play out first,” Madrigal said Thursday. “I was excited just to put the White Sox logo on, get in uniform. I had that wrist injury for half of the season, so my body feels fresh. I told them I only needed a couple of days to swing a wood bat, get used to it. I’m ready to go and just excited to move forward.” Madrigal was scheduled to play with the Arizona Rookie League White Sox on Thursday and Saturday before heading to low Single-A Kannapolis on Sunday. Ideally, he will finish the season with high A Winston-Salem, but Madrigal … [Read more...] about White Sox prospect Nick Madrigal begins pro career
