Max Verstappen lets his driving do the talking in Canada
Max Verstappen delivered a strong response to his recent critics by completing a practice double for the Canadian Grand Prix . Verstappen’s crash last time out in Monaco marked his fifth big mistake from six rounds, and he arrived in North America threatening to “headbutt someone” following a series of questions about his accident-prone campaign. But the 20-year-old Dutchman topped the time sheets in both sessions in his Red Bull at a sun-drenched Circuit Gilles Villeneuve as he allowed his driving to do the talking. Recommended Defined by unfulfilled promises, Alonso now stands at a crossroads Verstappen finished 0.130 seconds clear of Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen with championship leader Lewis Hamilton half-a-second off the pace. Sebastian Vettel, who trails Hamilton by 14 points in the title race, was fifth in the order. The Doobie Brothers: “These are the better days”
This story was originally broadcast on "Sunday Morning" October 3, 2021. Considering they've been playing the riff for half a century, maybe it shouldn't be a surprise, but knocking the rust off never sounded so good, as this band tuning up in a rehearsal hall in Burbank. "A band like ours," said Patrick Simmons, "is a little different than a lot of bands, I think." The Doobie Brothers are more than a "little different," selling more than 50 million albums over the last 50 years. Correspondent Jim Axelrod said, "You can count on one hand and maybe have a few fingers left over the number of bands that have had that kind of longevity?" "Right. I think we all feel pretty lucky," said John McFee. While other members have come and gone over the years, Simmons, McFee, Michael McDonald and Tom Johnston – the core four Doobies – are all feeling pretty fortunate to still be playing together, and are not about to let the kind of festering resentments that broke up other bands (and … [Read more...] about The Doobie Brothers: “These are the better days”
Douglas Brinkley: Let us celebrate patriots who put country over party
By U.S. presidential historian and author Douglas Brinkley: With Independence Day upon us, let's celebrate an underappreciated type of American archetype: the hyperpartisan defender of democracy. That is, politicians who put country over party in times of crisis. Charles Thomson was the Secretary of the Continental Congress from 1774 to 1789. Along with John Hancock, his was one of only two names to appear in the original printing of the Declaration of Independence. Thomson wrongly thought that the new country couldn't survive a two-party system, that polarization would reign supreme, and that the new nation would inevitably devolve into two mobs vying for power every four years. Thomson didn't know then that the federal government could produce incorruptible leaders such as Cassidy Hutchinson and Liz Cheney. They're truth-tellers in the Margaret Chase Smith tradition. Former aide Cassidy Hutchinson testifies on Jan. 6 warnings, pardon requests, and Trump trying to grab … [Read more...] about Douglas Brinkley: Let us celebrate patriots who put country over party

W Series champion Jamie Chadwick expresses doubts over female drivers in “physical” F1
Jamie Chadwick continued her domination of the all-female W Series, which is part of the undercard at this weekend’s British Grand Prix. Chadwick, of Jenner Racing, cruised to victory at Silverstone to make it four wins out of four in 2022. Finland's Emma Kimilainen crossed the line in second ahead of Chadwick's closest title rival Abbi Pulling, although the pair are under investigation for a collision in the closing stages. Pulling attempted a move up the inside of Kimilainen but made contact and spun her round. Pulling moved ahead for second place but, seemingly suffering with damage, Kimilainen chased her down. Chadwick won the W Series, which didn’t run in 2020, in both 2019 and 2021 and looks set to retain their crown this year. And her performance at Silverstone led to fresh calls for the 24-year-old from Bath to move up to either Formula 3 or Formula 2, the feeder series towards Formula 1. After her win at Silverstone, fans have been debating what should be her next move. … [Read more...] about W Series champion Jamie Chadwick expresses doubts over female drivers in “physical” F1

Body camera footage shows fatal police shooting of Jayland Walker
Akron, Ohio — A Black man shot and killed by Akron police officers in a hail of bullets following a vehicle and foot pursuit was unarmed at the time of the shooting, but a shot appeared to have come from the vehicle during the pursuit, and officers said they feared he was preparing to fire when they discharged their weapons, authorities said. Police on Sunday released video that the mayor called "heartbreaking" of the pursuit and shooting of Jayland Walker, 25, while pleading for peace and patience from the community while the state investigation into the shooting continues. Chief Steve Mylett said officers attempted to stop Walker's car for unspecified traffic and equipment violations, but less than a minute into a pursuit the sound of a shot was heard from the car and a transportation department camera captured what appeared to be a muzzle flash coming from the vehicle. Mylett said that changed the nature of the case from "a routine traffic stop to now a public safety issue." … [Read more...] about Body camera footage shows fatal police shooting of Jayland Walker
