The US Justice Department on Tuesday sued Steve Wynn to compel the hotel and casino magnate and Republican mega donor to register as an agent of China. The suit, filed in US District Court for the District of Columbia, argues that Wynn, former CEO of Wynn Resorts, leveraged his relationship with then-President Donald Trump and other members of his administration to advance Beijing's interests in 2017. The US Government said the complaint is the first affirmative civil lawsuit under the Foreign Agents Registration Act in more than 30 years - a sign of stepped-up enforcement efforts under the 1983 law. Wynn, a former finance chairman of the Republican National Committee, is accused of relaying a request from a senior Chinese official asking that the Trump administration remove a Chinese national who had sought asylum in the United States. His activities, prosecutors assert in the lawsuit, included discussing Beijing's interests directly with Trump during a dinner in June 2017 and … [Read more...] about American casino mogul Steve Wynn accused of acting as an agent of China in 2017 dealing with then US President Donald Trump

Targeted debt forgiveness isn’t a fair compromise | Opinion
The Biden administration could cancel student loans in the foreseeable future—but only for some. Forgiveness of up to $10,000 in student loans for each borrower and elimination of repayments for households that earn up to $125,000 per year are some of the ideas on the table. The Biden administration's interest in targeted forgiveness is an attempt to pass a compromise between supporters and critics of student loan cancellation. Student debt forgiveness has been a divisive issue for some time. Democrats are typically more supportive of it than Republicans . But there is a divide even among Democrats, as the more moderate members of the party do not champion blanket debt forgiveness. Targeted forgiveness, however, appears to have more support. Many polls show voters support some kind of targeted relief rather than widespread elimination of debt. Even those who didn't attend college could be convinced to support targeted forgiveness measures. And longtime opponents … [Read more...] about Targeted debt forgiveness isn’t a fair compromise | Opinion
Biden forest plan stirs dispute over what counts as “old”
President Joe Biden 's order to protect the nation’s oldest forests against climate change, wildfires and other problems devastating vast woodlands is raising a simple yet vexing question: When does a forest grow old? Millions of acres are potentially on the line — federal land that could eventually get new protections or remain open to logging as the administration decides which trees to count under Biden's order covering "old growth” and “mature” forests. Underlining the urgency of the issue are wildfires in California that killed thousands of giant sequoias in recent years. Experts say there’s no simple formula to determine what's old: Growth rates among different tree types vary greatly — and even within species, depending on their access to water and sunlight and soil conditions. Any definitions for old-growth or mature trees adopted by the Biden's administration are “going to be subjective,” said Mark Ashton, a forestry professor at the Yale School of the … [Read more...] about Biden forest plan stirs dispute over what counts as “old”
Loudoun’s NAACP Head Claims Embarrassing Comments Were Made By An Imposter | The Daily Wire
An NAACP chapter head who played a major role in pushing Loudoun County schools to embrace racial rhetoric claims she didn’t ask that the school system give black students more favorable treatment than poor children and English language learners, contrary to what public records suggest. Michelle Thomas, president of NAACP Loudoun, claims a typo-ridden document on official NAACP letterhead that was submitted to Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS) was written by an imposter who sought to make the NAACP look bad. “LCPS must address equitable access for African American students first,” said the document, first obtained by a parent activist under a Freedom of Information Act request and reviewed by The Daily Wire. “THIS LCPS ACTION PLAN IS TO COMBAT SYSTEMIC RACISM not to address other races, gender, [English language learners], socioecomic [sic] status or student with disabilities.” The document said “equity for most” would be achieved once the district addressed complaints that … [Read more...] about Loudoun’s NAACP Head Claims Embarrassing Comments Were Made By An Imposter | The Daily Wire

Rich Parents Are Tapping Into a Baby-Formula Black Market
The baby-formula shortage has been something of a nightmare for Aleisha Velez, a 25-year-old mother of two who lives in Philadelphia. Velez relies on the federal government’s Woman, Infants, and Children (WIC) program to get free formula, which means she can’t just get the product shipped to her home. So over the past two months, she has called store after store to find in-stock formula before traveling up to an hour one-way on a train or a bus (or both) to get it. And then she does it all over again: Because many stores are limiting how much formula parents can buy, she now makes the trek about once a week, compared with once a month before the shortages. “I’m sitting here struggling to make sure my son has what he needs,” she told me while on the way back from a formula run. “I don’t see how it’s fair.” With more than 40 percent of the country’s infant formula currently out of stock , millions of parents are scrambling to get ahold of supplies. But other parents with the means … [Read more...] about Rich Parents Are Tapping Into a Baby-Formula Black Market
Driver in ‘Monstrous’ Truck Attack Was Unknown to Security Officials
— -- The suspected terrorist who killed dozens of people -- including at least 10 children -- by plowing a truck into a crowd in France during Bastille Day celebrations Thursday night has been identified by officials as 31-year-old Mohamed Lahouaiej Bouhlel, who was unknown to French security services. Bouhlel, who was born in Tunisia, lived in Nice with his wife and worked as a delivery driver, officials said. He was killed in a shootout with police from his 18-ton vehicle. Fingerprints confirmed Bouhlel's identity and his wife has been detained since this morning, French prosecutor Francois Molins said at a news conference today. Officials recovered an automatic handgun, grenade and ammunition from his truck, among other weapons and items. Investigators seized computers and cellphones during searches at two different addresses, Molins said. Although Molins said the man was "entirely unknown by intelligence services" and had no file of radicalization, Bouhlel was … [Read more...] about Driver in ‘Monstrous’ Truck Attack Was Unknown to Security Officials
U.S. has vaccinated 20,000 migrants in border custody as part of massive operation
McAllen, Texas — The U.S. government has vaccinated more than 20,000 migrants and asylum-seekers in U.S. border custody since launching a massive COVID-19 vaccination campaign in late March , the top doctor at the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) told CBS News. During an interview this week, Dr. Pritesh Gandhi, the chief medical officer at DHS, said as many as 1,000 migrants are being vaccinated every day at 24 processing facilities across the U.S.-Mexico border as part of one of the largest medical initiatives the government has set up for undocumented individuals in U.S. custody. "It is something that I believe is historic, because we are building a health system all along the southwest border, an area that has been historically neglected for years, if not decades," Gandhi told CBS News on Tuesday during a tour of the migrant holding center in McAllen, Texas, one of the sites offering vaccines. Migrants who are not expelled under a pandemic-era rule known as Title … [Read more...] about U.S. has vaccinated 20,000 migrants in border custody as part of massive operation
US House voting on domestic terrorism bill after Buffalo attack
The US House of Representatives moved towards swift passage on Wednesday (local time) of legislation that would devote more federal resources to preventing domestic terrorism in response to the racist mass shooting in Buffalo, New York. The legislative effort is not new, as the House passed a similar measure in 2020 only to have it languish in the Senate. But lacking support in the US Senate to move ahead with the gun-control legislation that they say is necessary to stop mass shootings, Democrats are instead pushing for a broader federal focus on domestic terrorism. “We in Congress can’t stop the likes of (Fox News host) Tucker Carlson from spewing hateful, dangerous replacement theory ideology across the airwaves. Congress hasn’t been able to ban the sale of assault weapons. The Domestic Terrorism Prevention Act is what Congress can do this week to try to prevent future Buffalo shootings," Representative Brad Schneider, who first introduced the measure in 2017, said on the … [Read more...] about US House voting on domestic terrorism bill after Buffalo attack
Nearly half of Republicans think non-citizens should have baby formula—poll
Most Americans say non-citizen babies in the custody of the U.S. government should be fed baby formula amid a nationwide shortage, including almost half of Republicans , according to a new poll. Fifty-seven percent of Americans support the U.S. government providing formula for infants at the U.S.-Mexico border, while 19 percent do not, according to a new YouGov poll of 1,000 people. Among Republicans, 46 percent said they thought non-citizen babies in U.S. custody should receive the nutrition, while 34 percent said they should not. The results of the poll, conducted between May 13 and 16, comes after conservative lawmakers in recent days lashed out at President Joe Biden for providing scarce baby formula for babies crossing the border. The White House defended the move , pointing to the Flores Settlement Agreement which requires children in federal custody to be provided access to adequate food, water and medical assistance. Jen Psaki , in her final briefing as White … [Read more...] about Nearly half of Republicans think non-citizens should have baby formula—poll
