TWO teenage boys have been arrested after a 15-year-old schoolboy was stabbed to death. The youngster, named locally as Reece Tansey, was rushed to hospital but died from his injuries. Cops yesterday said the victim had staggered to a house after being attacked near a primary school and desperately knocked on the door for help. Residents told how the teenager was left covered in blood following the attack. Police scrambled to reports of an incident in Bolton, Lancs., at around 4.45am on Tuesday (May 3) morning. Greater Manchester Police have not yet revealed the exact circumstances surrounding what happened, or said what the boys, 14 and 15, have been arrested on suspicion of. Reece's uncle James said the boy had slipped out of his house via his bedroom window after receiving a text message. James believes Reece was lured to an ambush after wrongly being implicated in a car theft a few weeks earlier. He said: “He was a good boy. US astronaut Michael Collins, who piloted the ship on the historic Apollo 11 mission that saw the first humans walk on the moon, died on Wednesday. He was 90 years old. Collins' family said he died following a battle with cancer. Remembering the 'forgotten' astronaut During the Apollo 11 mission in July 1969, while Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin traveled to the surface of the moon and took a "giant leap for mankind," Collins stayed behind. For over 21 hours, Collins piloted the command module — circling the moon and losing contact with US space agency NASA every time the vessel passed into the dark side of the moon. "I know that I would be a liar or a fool if I said that I have the best of the three Apollo 11 seats, but I can say with truth and equanimity that I am perfectly satisfied with the one I have," Collins wrote in his 1974 autobiography Carrying the Fire . World marks 50 years since the Apollo 11 moon landing Monument to Apollo 11 Americans showed … [Read more...] about Michael Collins, the ‘forgotten astronaut’ of Apollo 11 dies, age 90
Is there such a thing as the ‘right’ amount of pocket money and if so, how do you calculate it? It’s a conundrum that parents face every single day as they try to balance their budgets with teaching their kids the value of money as they grow older and more independent. On average, parents dish out £6.48 a week on pocket money with a fifth basing this on household chores, according to Halifax bank. One in 20 splash out £20 a week or more, just under one in five do not pay any pocket money at all and for others, it all depends on how much they can afford that week. But one mum says £6.48 is far too much. Keely Mitchell bases her payments on chores, good behaviour and a marble jar which she says teaches her children about gratitude and hard earned money. Keely has three children, Violet aged 10, Joyce aged six and Walter aged three. Instead of paying them equally, she pays them in marbles, with a full jar equal to a sum of cash. “To learn the value of money means that you … [Read more...] about Mum explains pocket money ‘rule’ all parents should follow to calculate allowance
When Joe Biden boasted to world leaders last month that the US would halve its greenhouse emissions by 2030 from 2005 levels — urging his counterparts from countries like China and India to commit to stronger action — the US president left environmentalists unconvinced. The cuts are more ambitious than previous targets to burn less fossil fuel. But they will not stop the US from overshooting its fair share of the emissions that can be released to meet the 2015 Paris Agreement pledge to keep warming well below 2 degrees Celsius, and ideally 1.5C, according to independent research project Climate Action Tracker. This is a question of justice: The US has polluted the atmosphere more than any other economy on the planet and also has more money to deal with it. Factoring in those inequalities, Biden's pledge is "very close to or just within" the range of cuts needed to reach 2C, said Andreas Geiges, a researcher at Climate Analytics, which jointly runs the project. But it falls … [Read more...] about Climate justice: Do pledges ignore unequal emissions?
A 99-YEAR-OLD great-gran and her son were just "two minutes from death" when their house was completely destroyed by a suspected gas explosion. Fearless father and son duo Andy, 53, and Harry Hodges, 22, bravely ran into the burning building to save Ethel Hanford and her 75-year-old son Donald in Ashford, Kent. Terrified locals said the huge blast left a "volcano of rocks" as emergency services scrambled to treat seven people - two being in a "serious" condition. Dramatic doorbell CCTV footage captured the moment the huge blast destroyed several homes. But the tragedy could have been a lot worse if the Hodges, who both work in construction, were not driving past the house at 8am yesterday. The heroes saw the house ablaze and immediately pulled over to help. They managed to save the elderly pair before going next door to rescue 22-year-old Shannon Pankhurst, who turned out to be an old school friend of Harry’s.
