BRITISH sensation Emma Raducanu has beaten Czech Republic's Linda Noskova 6-7, 7-5, 6-1 in the first round at the French Open. The US Open champ led 2-0 and 4-2 in the first set but the Czech brilliantly fought back to win a tie-break and leave Raducanu with it all to do. However, Raducanu staged a fantastic fightback of her own to take the second set 7-5. And she wrapped things up with a dominant decider, winning it 6-1. Emma Raducanu 6-3, 1-6, 1-6 Aliaksandra Sasnovich – French Open LIVE RESULT: Brit OUT as Belarussians wins in three sets
EMMA RADUCANU is out of the French Open. Things looked good for the Brit when she stormed to a 6-3 victory in the first set on Court Suzanne Lenglen, which will be frequented by Novak Djokovic later today. However, Sasnovich emphatically snatched the second set 6-1 to set up a decider. And Raducanu was unable to keep up with the pace set by the Belarussian as she won 6-1 in the final set. Sasnovich has been something of a bogey player for Raducanu, having secured a crushing 6-2, 6-4 victory in their only previous meeting, at the Indian Wells Masters last October - the Brit's first match after winning the US Open. French Open controversy after child hit by racket – but player is not disqualifed
A young boy was left in tears during a French Open match when Romania's Irina-Camelia Begu narrowly avoided being defaulted from the tournament after hitting him with her racket. Bad behaviour and racquet abuse on the court have been contentious issues in men's tennis all season-long, but the drama on Thursday came from the women's draw. World No 63 Begu was down a break in the third set of her second-round match against Ekaterina Alexandrova when she bounced her racquet on the ground in frustration. It was innocuous enough, and not violent in any way, but the racquet flew further than expected and hit a child in the stands directly behind the umpire (watch video below). Irina-Camelia Begu just bounced her racket into the crowd, supervisor has been called. pic.twitter.com/EiIBNDAH2I — Damian Kust (@damiankust) May 26, 2022 The boy cried out in pain and the match was stopped while a lengthy exchange between Begu, the child's family, umpire Anis Ressaissi and the … [Read more...] about French Open controversy after child hit by racket – but player is not disqualifed
Why coaching Emma Raducanu is no longer the golden ticket
What’s happening with Emma Raducanu’s coaching situation? It’s the same question everyone has been asking since the news originally dropped, on September 24, that she had split with her US Open mentor Andrew Richardson . Admittedly, Raducanu spent perhaps three-and-a-half months working with the German coach Torben Beltz, but it never had the look of a lasting partnership . And now, as she heads into Sunday’s French Open, she will have no dedicated coach in her player box for the first time at a slam. Telegraph Sport has reported before on the unconventional approach of Raducanu’s family. Her father Ian has never had much faith in coaches as sources of continuous improvement. Instead, he likes to mine them for areas of specific expertise before casting them aside. But there could be another issue influencing Raducanu’s lack of a regular, steady appointment: a growing feeling inside the game that there could be more to lose from coaching her than there is to gain. Yes, she … [Read more...] about Why coaching Emma Raducanu is no longer the golden ticket
Wimbledon stripped of ranking points over Russian player ban
Wimbledon has been stripped of its ranking points by the ATP and WTA Tours as the tennis world dramatically escalated its response to the ban on Russian and Belarusian players. On a humiliating day for British tennis , the ATP carried through with its threat to take action over the ban at around 7pm on Friday night, with the women’s tour following 45 minutes later. The upshot is that Wimbledon has effectively been reduced to an exhibition tournament. Telegraph Sport last week told how the world’s leading male players, led by Rafa Nadal , had demanded the drastic course of action following a locker room backlash to the ban. And today Wimbledon is facing up to one of the biggest crises in its history. There seems little prospect of the All England Club backing down over its decision – but it could potentially escalate the row even further, if it managed to corral the other three major tournaments into setting up a new grand-slam rankings system of their own. The ban on … [Read more...] about Wimbledon stripped of ranking points over Russian player ban
Ukrainian player launches attack on WTA over Belarusian Victoria Azarenka’s players’ council role
Ukraine's Marta Kostyuk has branded Belarusian Victoria Azarenka's position on the WTA’s players’ council “ridiculous” and hit out at their failure to consult her or her compatriots on the decision to strip Wimbledon of ranking points . Two-time major champion Azarenka will not play at Wimbledon next month due to the ban on Russian and Belarusian players, but has continued in her role as a member of the WTA player council, which supported the ranking points decision made by the tours . The 19-year-old Kostyuk hit out at the apparent conflict of interest in Azarenka being a part of leading decision making on behalf of the female tour. "Victoria Azarenka is in the players' board, making decisions about points in Wimbledon, where she's not even participating, and saying that she has no personal interest in making decisions,” Kostyuk said. “Just the fact that she's present there on the calls, doing whatever. It's ridiculous." Kostyuk added that it has left her feeling … [Read more...] about Ukrainian player launches attack on WTA over Belarusian Victoria Azarenka’s players’ council role
Players open to reversing Wimbledon ranking points decision ahead of crunch talks
The ATP Players' Council are open to watering down their position on stripping Wimbledon of all ranking points ahead of crunch talks in Paris on Friday. In what is the latest twist in the Wimbledon ranking points row, ATP player council member Bruno Soares revealed they were open to a reversal of the decision if officials from the All England Tennis Club demonstrated an ability to collaborate. Soares, Jamie Murray's doubles partner and a veteran member of the players' union, told reporters on Wednesday that until play begins at SW19, there was "always room for change" - be that a complete about-turn or toning down of the ruling. Wimbledon chief executive Sally Bolton and chairman Ian Hewitt are due in Paris on Friday to attend the French Open where they will inevitably face talks over the row that has divided the locker room , the Grand Slams and the sport as a whole. But if the players are to weaken their stance and push for ranking points to be frozen instead of stripped … [Read more...] about Players open to reversing Wimbledon ranking points decision ahead of crunch talks
So What’s the Point of Playtime?
Anyone who has ever chucked a tennis ball in the general vicinity of a border collie knows that some animals take play very seriously—the intense stare, the tremble of anticipation, the apparent joy with every bounce, all in pursuit of inedible prey that tastes like the backyard. Dogs are far from the only animals that devote considerable time and energy to play. Juvenile wasps wrestle with hive mates, otters toss rocks between their paws, and human children around the world go to great lengths to avoid make-believe lava on the living-room floor. When a dog chases a ball or a child adjudicates relationship disputes in doll-land, something important and meaningful is clearly happening in their minds, says Laura Schulz, a cognitive scientist at MIT. “Play has a lot of peculiar and fascinating properties,” she says. “It’s totally fundamental to learning and human intelligence.” Scientists take play seriously too. For decades, psychologists, evolutionary biologists, and animal … [Read more...] about So What’s the Point of Playtime?
