THEATRE snowflakes are warning classic rib-tickler The Lady Killers is a bit . . . slapstick. The story — adapted from the 1955 Ealing Comedy film — tells of a gang of useless criminals posing as musicians outfoxed by their feisty landlady after a bank raid. Two of the bumbling crooks fall to their deaths while another is murdered, all unseen by the audience. But customers at the renowned ADC Theatre in Cambridge are warned that the play includes “some comedic/slapstick violence. Death (offstage, implied).” In the Oscar-nominated film version, Alec Guinness and Peter Sellers star alongside Katie Johnson. Leonard Cohen’s Dark Wisdom
Anyone despairing about the world, humanity, and evil can turn to Leonard Cohen’s catalogue for the comfort of confirmation. He sang of dark beating light, of human attachment as flimsy and breakable, of deep fears being validated inexorably, of the greatest temptation being the embrace of defeat. He cracked jokes and sang of romance, but as part of the larger, grimmer project we’re all engaged in: “There’s a lover in the story / But the story’s still the same,” he explained in song this year. This unflinching worldview underlay his many virtues—his cutting p oetic sensibility, his cracked and ever-deepening voice, his flair for flamenco, and his melodies that became an unending source of inspiration across the musical landscape. He has died at age 82, shortly after he said in interviews and song he was ready to die, shortly after he’d written a farewell note to his ailing ex and lyrical muse Marianne Ihlen offering, “it’s come to this time when we are really so old and our … [Read more...] about Leonard Cohen’s Dark Wisdom
Man charged over track protest
A 56-year-old man has been remanded in custody after appearing in court for attempting to disrupt the British grand prix at Silverstone yesterday. Neil Horan, of south-east London, is facing one count of aggravated trespass following the incident at the Northamptonshire circuit yesterday. No plea was entered and magistrates in Northampton adjourned the case for seven days. Horan, originally from County Kerry in the Irish Republic, spoke only to confirm his full name, Cornelius Horan, age and address during the brief hearing. Chairman of the bench Richard Nelson told Horan his next appearance before the court would be via video-link from prison. Applying unsuccessfully for bail, Horan's solicitor Paul Carter said he was on sabbatical and a man of "strong and moral views on religion". Black-haired Horan appeared in the dock wearing a grey tank top, white shirt and grey trousers and was flanked by two security guards. He sat impassively throughout the 10-minute hearing … [Read more...] about Man charged over track protest
Supreme Court’s conservatives assert control as momentous term comes to an end
Washington — Five years after Neil Gorsuch joined the Supreme Court, nearly four years after Brett Kavanaugh replaced a retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy and 20 months after Amy Coney Barrett was confirmed days before the 2020 election, the Supreme Court's expanded conservative majority exerted its power across a blockbuster term marked by major decisions on abortion, the Second Amendment and religious rights. The term that kicked off in October officially came to a close Thursday, with the justices issuing its final two decisions — one curbing the Environmental Protection Agency's authority to regulate greenhouse gas emissions and a second paving the way for the Biden administration to roll back the so-called "Remain in Mexico" immigration policy — before recessing for the summer. But it was the rulings issued on successive days last week to wipe away the constitutional right to an abortion and expand gun rights for the first time in more than a decade that … [Read more...] about Supreme Court’s conservatives assert control as momentous term comes to an end
Is Saving Private Ryan a true story?
STEVEN Spielberg’s 1998 film Saving Private Ryan may have shown some of the most graphic fighting scenes ever. But like many wondering, is the film based on a true story? Find out here. Is Saving Private Ryan a true story? While the events of WWII portrayed in Saving Private Ryan are real, the characters are all fictitious. However, the film draws inspiration from the story of an actual soldier named Fritz Niland and a U.S. war department directive called the sole-survivor directive. Screenwriter Robert Rodat was inspired to craft the narrative upon reading Stephen Ambrose's nonfiction retrospective D-Day: June 6, 1944: The Climactic Battle of World War II. The 1998 film's plot focuses on Captain John H. Miller, played by Tom Hanks, who leads a platoon of GI during the D-day Normandy invasion, at the tie of WWII. The U.S. directive which is referred to as the "Only son" or "Sole-surviving son" policy, was designed to protect the line remaining family members … [Read more...] about Is Saving Private Ryan a true story?
Patricia Heaton Proves Conservatives Can Be Hollywood Stars, Too | The Daily Wire
Patricia Heaton is an outspoken conservative Christian and a successful Hollywood actress, proving those two identities are not mutually exclusive. Heaton stands out from the crowd precisely because her position is so unique in the entertainment industry. Anyone who watches movies and television knows that Hollywood is overwhelmingly liberal. Conservatives may exist in the ranks, but they either keep silent about their views or they’re relegated to small parts in indie projects. Heaton is an exception to this rule as she built a decades-long career, most notably starring as Debra Barone on the hit CBS comedy “Everybody Loves Raymond” opposite Ray Romano from 1996 – 2005. It was a career-making gig that led to other opportunities and arguably made Heaton a household name. The 64-year-old actress did not become a television star by hiding her political views. Though Heaton does reject some core beliefs of diehard conservatives — like her stance on LGBT issues — the mom of … [Read more...] about Patricia Heaton Proves Conservatives Can Be Hollywood Stars, Too | The Daily Wire
Game of Thrones star Lena Headey ‘sued’ over role in Thor: Love and Thunder
Game of Thrones star Lena Headey is being sued by her former agency for $1.5million (£1.2million) over her scrapped role in Thor: Love and Thunder , it has been claimed. Troika, which changed its name to YMU in 2020, claims that Headey owes them at least $500,000 of the money she earned from the new Marvel movie. According to Variety , Headey, 48, was eventually cut from the film and will not appear, but YMU believe that they are entitled to the equivalent of 7% of the commission fee she received for her work. In addition, the talent agency are also reportedly aiming to secure $300,000 (£249,000) over her work in Gigi Gaston’s movie, 9 Bullets, from earlier this year. On top of that, YMU are apparently claiming that they are entitled to an extra $650,000 (£541,000) for the star’s stint for unaired Showtime series Rita, which didn’t secure a series order. Headey was set to appear as the titular character in the adaption of the original Danish series, but only … [Read more...] about Game of Thrones star Lena Headey ‘sued’ over role in Thor: Love and Thunder
The Lawless Frontier
This past April in Quetta, the bleached-gray, drought-stricken capital of the Pakistani border province of Baluchistan, I awoke to explosions and gunfire. In search of the violence, my translator, Jamil, and I jumped into a four-wheel-drive Toyota and raced through the section of town inhabited by Pashtoon tribesmen. Suddenly we were surrounded by Pakistani soldiers, who forced us out of the car and pointed assault rifles in our faces. While they searched us, I saw two other soldiers with automatic weapons run along a high wall a few feet from where we stood. Shots rang out from inside the adjacent compound. By 11:00 a.m. five people had been killed and twenty wounded, and a large cache of weapons had been confiscated in a raid on the Pashtoonkhwa Milli Awami (Pashtoon National People's Party), a group supporting an independent "Pashtoonistan" created out of Pakistani territory. The party stood accused of murders and kidnapping. Security forces claimed victory, but reports later … [Read more...] about The Lawless Frontier
