Arsenal will meet Ajax in the coming days to discuss a deal for Lisandro Martinez and are refusing to give up on the defender despite his preference being to join Manchester United . The versatile Argentine looks increasingly likely to leave Amsterdam this summer despite the Eredivisie champions being desperate to keep hold of their Player of the Year. Ajax have already lost several of their stars, with Ryan Gravenberch joining Bayern Munich and Sebastien Haller on the verge of a move to Borussia Dortmund. They had been adamant they would not let anyone else leave unless they received an offer that was too good to turn down, and now both Arsenal and United are nearing that price tag for Martinez. Ajax are believed to want around €50million (£43m) guaranteed, though so far United’s best offer has only reached £34m up front in addition to £4m in bonuses and add-ons. Arsenal have also had several offers rebuffed, but The Athletic report that the Gunners’ … [Read more...] about Arsenal schedule fresh Ajax meeting even though Lisandro Martinez prefers Manchester United move

Autobahn: Germany’s roads to nowhere
When German electronic band Kraftwerk released the iconic song "Autobahn" in 1975, they were celebrating freedom of movement on freeways where drivers could speed without limit. But these mythical superhighways are today a source of increasing division as the climate crisis demands countries curb road transport emissions. Though the autobahn's origins are wrongly ascribed to Hitler — he completed the first highways with forced labor, but they were a Weimar-period invention — today their legend is associated with Germany's failure to meet its climate obligations. Transport generates over 20% of German greenhouse gases. It was also one of only two sectors to fail its annual emission reduction targets in 2021. Yet new road construction projects — as opposed to low-emission electric railways or bicycle highways — dominate the 2030 federal transport plan. Some 850 kilometers (528 miles) of autobahns are on the drawing board. Activists call out autobahn 'disaster' Opposition … [Read more...] about Autobahn: Germany’s roads to nowhere
Lando Norris reveals the dark side of fame ahead of British Grand Prix
Lando Norris has revealed he has been subjected to death threats – and described social media abuse aimed at his model girlfriend as “horrific”. The 22-year-old British driver, in his fourth Formula One campaign, has established himself as a fans’ favourite, with more than five million followers on Instagram. But speaking ahead of Sunday’s British Grand Prix, Norris also revealed the dark side to fame. “I get death threats every now and then,” he said. “Most people do. Not enough gets done and it is tough. “If I had seen the threats when I started in 2019, it would have had more effect, but now I understand when you have to laugh – not laugh at a death threat – but laugh at the silly comments people come up with and things they try to create to get attention. Recommended Over £130m handed to housing providers named and shamed by regulator “I want to race, travel the world, meet new people and create new experiences – and they are using their one … [Read more...] about Lando Norris reveals the dark side of fame ahead of British Grand Prix
Meghan Markle won’t have custody of her own children with Prince Harry, royal expert says
It's no secret Meghan Markle and Prince Harry eventually plan to have children now that they're married. The newlyweds have previously spoken fondly of their desires to start their own family when they're good and ready, however, according to British law, Markle and Harry won't actually have parental custody of their own kids. Instead, Harry's grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II will technically have ownership of the children. "The sovereign has legal custody of the minor grandchildren," Marlene Koenig, renowned royal author and expert, revealed during an interview with Australia's News.com.au on Wednesday. The law dates back some 300 years during King George I's reign in the 1700s. "The law's never been changed. He did it because he had a very poor relationship with his son, the future King George II, so they had this law passed that meant the King was the guardian of his grandchildren," Koenig continued. It was 1717 when a group of judges voted to pass the law, proposed by George … [Read more...] about Meghan Markle won’t have custody of her own children with Prince Harry, royal expert says
Prince Harry, growing up without Princess Diana
In 1997, Newsweek reported extensively on the untimely death of Princess Diana and its aftermath. In this piece, Jerry Adler and Donna Foote report on how the tragedy will affect Diana's children, Prince William and Prince Harry. We are republishing the piece on the occasion of Prince Harry's wedding to Meghan Markle. She had tried, she often said, to give her two sons as normal a life as possible. So when Prince William said he'd like to meet one of the world's most beautiful women, Diana did what any mother of a teenage boy would do—phoned Cindy Crawford, whom she barely knew, and invited her to tea. Arriving at Kensington Palace, the supermodel found herself alone in a room with William, where they chatted for a few minutes until Diana joined them, and, noticing her son blushing, confided to Crawford: "He's just like me; when he runs out of things to say, he just blushes." In a few years, when he adds to his titles that of World's Most Eligible Bachelor, William (now 15) … [Read more...] about Prince Harry, growing up without Princess Diana

Remarkable friendships from the animal world
In the leafy Pine Barrens of southern New Jersey lies a very different kind of farm: the astonishing Funny Farm, a not-for-profit animal sanctuary open to the public two days a week, created by New Jersey's own Doctor Doolittle, Laurie Zaleski. Every animal here is a rescue – abused, abandoned, disabled – and Zaleski has healed and protected more than 600 animals over the last 20 years, from retired racehorses to raucous roosters. "We have 115 roosters," she said. And it sounded like it! Correspondent Lesley Stahl asked, "For those people who have never been here, never even heard of the Funny Farm, how would you describe it?" "I say Heaven on Earth, especially for animals," Zaleski replied. "And for people, because when you walk through the gates, you can feel the inner peace and harmony, because they all get along here. "My mother had the original Funny Farm, and she said it's full of animals and fit for lunatics!" laughed Zaleski. As she writes in her book, "Funny Farm: … [Read more...] about Remarkable friendships from the animal world
