Tory windfall tax row widens as two more Cabinet ministers reject the policy
Cabinet ministers have lined up to warn Rishi Sunak off plans for a windfall tax on energy firms , insisting the move would damage the economy and have unintended consequences. In a highly unusual display of public dissent, Brandon Lewis, the Northern Ireland Secretary, and Sajid Javid, the Health Secretary, became the fifth and sixth Cabinet members to speak out against the policy in the space of a week. The Chancellor has refused to rule out the idea of a one-off windfall tax on North Sea giants, which is being pushed by Labour and has support from some Tory backbenchers - although others fear it would be unconservative. Mr Sunak is attracted to the idea of a windfall tax that would offer firms different rates based on how much money they are prepared to invest in new energy infrastructure in Britain, The Sunday Times reported late on Saturday. Kwasi Kwarteng, the Business Secretary, last week described a windfall tax as “taxing investment in jobs”, while Liz Truss, Suella … [Read more...] about Tory windfall tax row widens as two more Cabinet ministers reject the policy

FTSE rises as BP and Shell shrug off windfall tax
Oil giants BP and Shell both saw their shares rise on Thursday despite the Government’s promise to slap them with a tax hike as investors seemed unconcerned by the news. The companies, which have made bumper profits in recent months, will have to pay an extra 25% of their profits from the North Sea. But the Chancellor also announced an extra tax incentive to invest in pumping up more oil and gas. This means the oil giants can avoid almost their entire tax bill. “Whatever you want to call it, markets have been left largely unruffled by Rishi Sunak’s ‘windfall tax’. Shares in those big oil businesses slipped a touch in anticipation of the Chancellor’s non-budget but dusted themselves off pretty quickly as it became apparent that the stick came along with a pretty big carrot,” said AJ Bell financial analyst Danni Hewson. Auto Trader cheers best ever results on boom in car demand
Online car marketplace Auto Trader has hailed its best ever annual performance thanks to a boost from pent-up demand for vehicles following Covid lockdowns. The group saw pre-tax profits nearly double to £301 million in the year to March 31 – up from £157.4 million the previous year – as revenues surged 65% to £432.7 million. Profits were also 20% higher compared with 2019-20, before the pandemic struck. Chief executive Nathan Coe said it was the “best financial and operational performance in our history”. The group said it had been buoyed by strong demand for both new and used cars over the past financial year, “fuelled by a catch-up in transactions that didn’t happen in 2020” due to lockdowns, as well as increased interest in car ownership and higher consumer confidence. A move 300 years in the making: UK takes steps to recognise the Irish language
Since the UK divided Ireland, successive Governments in London have discouraged people from speaking the Irish language in the Northern part of the island. Activists then attempted over the next101 years to get the language fully recognized. Now the UK has begun the process to do just that. In Belfast, Irish nationalists have welcomed the move. Caoimhín O’ Seanáin, a teacher in West Belfast, told Euronews: “We no longer have to be second-class citizens in our own Country. “The Irish Language will be much more visible. It will be available for use in the Courts. Legislation that goes back centuries will be removed.” The Act will also recognise the relatively unknown Ulster-Scots language.
