By Becky Morton Published 2 hours ago Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Labour has called for an extension of the tax on oil and gas companies to fund a freeze in the energy price cap. The cap - the maximum amount suppliers can charge for average use - is forecast to hit £3,582 in October and £4,266 in January. Leader Sir Keir Starmer said Labour's plans would save the typical family £1,000. The government said it had pledged £37bn of support to help people through the winter. Unveiling his party's £29bn plan to help with soaring energy costs, Sir Keir said Labour "wouldn't let people pay a penny more" on their winter fuel bills. He said freezing the price cap at the current level of £1,971 a year for the typical household would bring inflation down by 4%. Read Bernie’s Lips: Warren Will Raise Taxes
Elizabeth Warren is as good a politician as any: she charms and she takes 70,000 selfies, but she also pivots and deflects. In recent debates Warren has slipperily refused to admit that her Medicare for All plan would require a tax hike on middle-class families. So when she again refused to answer the question, sticking to her line that overall costs would go down, other candidates answered for her. Pete Buttigieg said it. Amy Klobuchar said it. Beto O'Rourke said it. Even Bernie Sanders said it. "As someone who wrote the damn bill," the Vermont senator cut in, "I do think it is appropriate to acknowledge that taxes will go up. They will go up significantly for the wealthy and for virtually everybody, the tax increase will be substantially less." Warren still couldn't admit it in those words and defaulted to her favorite phrase: "costs will go down for hard working middle-class families." Next to her Buttiegieg just stood there shaking his head and Klobuchar summed up the bizarro … [Read more...] about Read Bernie’s Lips: Warren Will Raise Taxes

Savage bust-up between rival Tory camps in leadership race will see ‘venomous’ Dominic Raab sent to political Siberia
Dominic Raab will be condemned to the political wilderness in punishment for his ‘vicious’ barbs against Liz Truss if she becomes the next Prime Minister, her allies suggest. They have described the Rishi Sunak-backer’s attack on her plans to cut tax as ‘the saddest moment of the campaign’, as the pair were once close. But the Deputy Prime Minister’s allies hit back yesterday, saying he had ‘seen it all before’ – and accusing her campaign of lacking charm. As the contest enters its fourth week, the blue-on-blue attacks showed few signs of abating. The latest acrimony began after Mr Raab branded Ms Truss’s tax-cutting plans as ‘electoral suicide’. The Foreign Secretary dismissed his intervention as spreading ‘portents of doom’. Cost of living: Keir Starmer set to call for energy price cap freeze
Published 1 hour ago Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Labour is to call for the energy price cap to be frozen this autumn, part of a plan to deal with the cost of living. Sir Keir Starmer is expected to make the call on Monday, in which he will explain how Labour would pay for the plan if it was in power. The cap - the maximum amount suppliers can charge customers for average use - is £1,971 a year. But experts expect it to climb to around £3,500 a year and for every household to see steep rises in bills. Previously the level of the cap was only reviewed every six months but Ofgem changed the rules this year, meaning that it is expected to rise in both October and again in January. It has already been announced by the government that all households in England, Scotland and Wales, where the cap applies, will receive £400 to help pay rising fuel bills this autumn. … [Read more...] about Cost of living: Keir Starmer set to call for energy price cap freeze
I – and plenty of other women I know – am very partial to a nerd
How does he have time? That was my first thought on reading about the rumoured fling between billionaire Tesla founder Elon Musk and Nicole Shanahan, wife of the billionaire Google founder, Sergey Brin. People are always asking about how women juggle things, but how does Musk, a busy chap who married the same actress twice and is also said to have recently had twins with one of his employees, have time to shoehorn an affair into his demanding personal life, as well as running multiple businesses and plotting excursions to space? My second thought, though, was, well of course that makes sense, because Elon’s a nerd. King of the nerds, if you like. And I – and plenty of other women I know – am very partial to a nerd. Admittedly, this nerd is the world’s richest man with a fortune of more than £200 billion, and that probably helps. But a bulging bank balance isn’t the only attraction – honest. My first boyfriend was a major nerd: an academic whose specialist subject was 18th-century … [Read more...] about I – and plenty of other women I know – am very partial to a nerd
Liz Truss wants to deport asylum seekers to other countries, not just Rwanda
The plan to deport people seeking asylum in the UK to Rwanda has not proved universally popular, with people from Prince Charles to the Archbishop of Canterbury reportedly condemning it. But Tory leadership hopeful Liz Truss is a fan – so much so, that she wants to extend the scheme to other countries as well. ‘The Rwanda policy is the right policy,’ she told the Mail on Sunday today. ‘I’m determined to see it through to full implementation, as well as exploring other countries that we can work on similar partnerships with. It’s the right thing to do.’ Britain currently stands to lose the £120 million it has already paid to Rwanda if the plan to deport migrants there is ruled unlawful by the courts and it can’t go ahead. Yesterday, Rwanda defended the policy but said it now only has capacity to take 200 migrants, as opposed to the up to 1,000 previously discussed. Rwandan government spokesperson Yolande Makolo said this could ‘scale up’ in the future but at … [Read more...] about Liz Truss wants to deport asylum seekers to other countries, not just Rwanda
More injury drama for Emma Raducanu as she battles through to reach Citi Open quarter-finals
E mma Raducanu suffered blister problems which left the skin “ripping off” her injured hand, causing fresh concern just weeks before her US Open defence . In furnace-like conditions in Washington and on an eerily quiet court, Raducanu was subjected to the ultimate endurance test in a dogged, second-round win over Camila Osorio at the Citi Open. The 7-6, 7-6 win set up a quarter-final against Liudmila Samsonova today and the question is how Raducanu will be able to recover from her callouses, described as “pretty ugly” by on court interviewer Rennae Stubbs after the match. Witnessed by only a sparse crowd in the US capital, temperatures peaked at 35 degrees with many spectators sheltering under umbrellas and towels because of the fierce heat. In a measure of her resilience, Raducanu was twice pushed to a final set-tie break. Twice she pulled through to close out a victory in this marathon match, which descended into a battle of the blisters in the suffocating heat. After two … [Read more...] about More injury drama for Emma Raducanu as she battles through to reach Citi Open quarter-finals
