A NEWLYWED couple could face jail time after they took their seven-year-old daughter out of school for a dream honeymoon. Janine and Shane Scott jetted off to New York for five days with Elissa - believing her head teacher would grant the time off due to exceptional services. But when the couple from Stockton-on-Tees landed back in the UK, they were slapped with £60 fixed penalty notices, which they have decided to fight on principle. They were hauled before Teesside magistrates and now face a three-month jail sentence and a £2,500 fine after pleading not guilty to the strict liability offence, the Mirror reports. Janine, 28, said: "This was a once-in-a-lifetime trip. Two-thirds of parents have considered or have taken their child out of school to go on a family holiday, new research claims. A new poll suggests two-thirds of those who have taken child out of school for a holiday, or would consider it, because they say it was too expensive to go on holiday during the school holidays. The Atomik Research poll shows there are the large number of mums and dads willing to interrupt their children's studies so they can take a cheaper holiday. They cite, as many know, the price of family holidays can double during the school breaks. Those who bend the rules to take their children away on holiday during term time do however risk receiving fines, reports our sister title Birmingham Live. Whether to take children out of school in term time causes great discussion among parents and education bosses - and it's an issue that greatly divides families. While some believe it's fine and children rarely miss out on anything vital at the end of the year, others believe every day in the classroom counts. So what are the rules? Well the Department of Education (DoE) says 'headteachers should not grant leave of absence unless there are exceptional circumstances'. With temperatures reaching uncomfortable levels, it is natural parents' thoughts are turning to their children and whether they are going to be able to deal with the heat. Almost half of parents have taken their child out of school to go on holiday, with many saying it is too expensive to go away during the summer break, a poll suggests. As the summer holidays draw ever closer we want to know if you would take your child out of school for a holiday.
