As a 41-year-old working side by side with a 22-year-old it is easy to forget she never felt the thrill of renting a VHS on a Friday night – or the frustration of discovering the person beforehand never bothered rewinding the movie. So I sat down with Lyric Waiwiri-Smith to field her questions and school her on the best and worst of life before 2000. Lyric Waiwiri-Smith: How did you cope without GPS? Did everyone just carry maps? Amberleigh Jack: Pretty much. We had maps in the glove box and if you were on a road trip you had your passenger navigate. Before settling into the serious business of self-revelation, Jean-Jacques Sempé places a roll-up between his lips and plops on to the piano bench. As he bangs away at the keys, swaying and puffing in rhythm, he bears a startling resemblance to one of the cartoon figures that have, over the last four decades, made him a legend. His depictions of housewives spit-polishing train tracks, businessmen quibbling over metaphysics at the water-cooler and astronauts discussing extramarital affairs en route to the moon have been published in more than 30 countries. Born in Bordeaux in 1932, Sempé has spent most of his life in the St Germain-des-Près district of Paris, where he lives a stone's throw from the actress Catherine Deneuve. As a young man, he worked endless odd jobs, even delivering wine by bicycle through the rolling hills of the Gironde. The attack caused international outrage and prompted India to introduce stringent anti-rape laws. A court sentenced her attackers to death this September. The BBC's Soutik Biswas met the family of the victim to find out how life had changed for them after her death. Her father had returned home tetchy and tired after a gruelling 16-hour working day at Delhi's international airport on the night of 16 December 2012. He received a call from a breathless policeman an hour before midnight that his daughter had met with an accident and had been taken to hospital.
