The game marked a very unusual occurrence with Liam Griffiths equalling his father Tony’s Athletic second XV appearance record with 216 second XV outings.Despite not playing for five weeks the Athletic showed no signs of rustiness. Within two minutes No 8 and captain Aaron Mordecai broke from a scrum and a deft offload saw flanker Geraint Lang cross for the opening try. Outside half Scott Jones converted. Centre Luke Holyman tackled his opposite number on his own 22, stripped the ball and raced 75 metres for the second Athletic try again converted by Jones with a good touchline kick. Cambuslang...36 East Kilbride...64 A mixed but ultimately profitable day saw East Kilbride take full points from their short trip to Cambuslang on Saturday. Mixed, in that another devastating display with ball in hand was watered down somewhat by a poor defensive effort which allowed the home side to run in five tries of their own, their big and hard-running winger in particular causing EK problems. In truth, effective as this tactic was, Cambuslang had little in the way of a Plan B and it is not much use having a star winger if you cannot get the ball to him. The visitors though had options aplenty. With their front row dominant and the line-out functioning well EK had a solid base from which to operate. Archant Ely had a troubled first half, Thetford used the width and their pace to run the Tigers ragged. They quickly got on the scoreboard with two converted tries. Stacey Mould finds some space out on the wing while Luke Cornwell looks on. PHOTO: Steve Wells. Ely fought back and gained a penalty on the twenty-two after a Thetford player was sin-binned for a dangerous clear out in the ruck. Ely opted for the corner and Nathan Brooks took the line-out then received the ball back with a clever forward’s move and darted in untouched for a converted try, Joel Scott Paul added the arrears.
