Celebrities rebel against Instagram boss as he tries to match TikTok
Among the photo captions of his 500-year-old house in Lindos, Rhodes, Jasper Conran had some advice for Instagram’s chief executive. With its ornate door knocker and mosaic floors, the house has remained in its original form for five centuries, Conran wrote. The British fashion designer had captured this stillness in photographs, for years the defining feature of Instagram that made it popular with celebrities and brought in billions of dollars in advertising revenue. But Conran expressed a growing frustration over a redesign that millions of users feel is being forced upon them by the social media app. “Please don’t let us down in the frankly callous way that you appear to be doing. Make Instagram Instagram again; either that or create a parallel platform that doesn’t wipe out the existing one,” he wrote to Adam Mosseri, Instagram chief at Meta. He warned the app threatened to “kill off the skill and hard work that so many millions” have put into photographs. Instagram is … [Read more...] about Celebrities rebel against Instagram boss as he tries to match TikTok

How Russia-Ukraine peace talks would go, according to Zelensky’s adviser
An advisor to the Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky has said he doubts Russia would negotiate an end to Vladimir Putin 's invasion in good faith. In an interview with the BBC's Ukrainian service , Mykhailo Podolyak said that Moscow would use talks as an operational pause so it could make up for its shortfall in munitions and technology due to sanctions and then adjust its military strategy. "Russia is so intellectually predictable," that it would be "obvious" how any negotiations would play out, according to Podolyak. He believes that Russia would seek to start talks with a promise to temporarily stop shelling areas it is trying to seize. Moscow would then portray the administrations in place in the already captured territories as de facto Russian, and so should be recognized as "lost," a position Ukraine would refuse to accept. "Then a banal story would take place," he said, according to a translation. This would involve a ceasefire being followed by a Ukrainian … [Read more...] about How Russia-Ukraine peace talks would go, according to Zelensky’s adviser
Josh Groban on his new Netflix show, his new album and his canine collaborator
"Everything that's happened has been unexpected," Josh Groban says of his career. As a teenager, he studied acting, but that high lyric baritone could not be denied: By 2007, Groban was the No. 1 pop artist in the U.S., thanks in part to his 2003 hit "You Raise Me Up." In 2015, he was offered a starring role in the Broadway musical Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812 , an electro-pop adaptation of War and Peace. That earned him a Tony nomination. Now, a few TV cameos ( The Office, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend ) over the years have evolved into his own show, Netflix's The Good Cop, from Monk creator Andy Breckman. Groban plays Tony "TJ" Caruso, a by-the-book New York City police officer; Tony Danza co-stars as his dad, a disgraced ex-cop. The 10-episode series debuts September 21, which also happens to be the release date for Groban's eighth studio album, Bridges . "The timing was perfect," he says of Good Cop 's four-month shoot. "It fit right between finishing the album … [Read more...] about Josh Groban on his new Netflix show, his new album and his canine collaborator
What’s coming to Netflix in September?
If you've been following Sanaa Lathan on social media over the last few months, then you likely already know that the actor—who typically adorns a crown of long, flowing hair atop her head—suddenly, randomly, completely shaved her head. Well, now the Hollywood darling will give fans some insight on what caused that big chop when her upcoming feature film, Nappily Ever After , premieres on Netflix in September. The movie follows the life of a seemingly perfect working woman who decides to make some drastic changes following a life-altering moment, starting by taking a set of clippers to her luscious, signature locks. A scary feat no doubt, but Lathan's character will find herself on a journey of self-discovery that she's never quite experienced before and will appreciate like none other. Is there ever a better time for inward-looking and self-reflection rather than fall? Certainly not, especially when Netflix is egging viewers on with encouraging movies like Nappily Ever After . … [Read more...] about What’s coming to Netflix in September?
New Discovery in Ancient Pompeii Reveals Secrets of Roman Society
A series of four new rooms unearthed in a family home in Pompeii in southern Italy have revealed how the ancient Roman city's middle class struggled to keep up their status. Gabriel Zuchtriegel, director general of the heritage site, has shown how the new rooms highlight the vast difference between the ancient city's elite and the rising middle class. He explained: "In the Roman empire, there was an ample chunk of the population that struggled with their social status and for whom daily bread was anything but a given." The expert, who released details of the new find, shows how ordinary citizens' lives were a far cry from the sparkling fountains and mosaics of the ruling classes. A simple wooden cabinet is part of items that reveal the day-to-day lives of middle-class Romans. The cabinet contains what looks like a sink and the remains of a simple faucet. The discoveries were announced by the Pompeii Archaeological Park on August 7.
