Israel faces fifth election in four years after parliament votes to dissolve itself

June 30, 2022 by news.sky.com

Israel's parliament has voted to dissolve itself, sparking the country's fifth election in less than four years. Former talk show host Yair Lapid, currently foreign minister, will take control of the Knesset from Naftali Bennett - Israel's shortest-serving prime minister - from just after midnight on Friday. The government, a coalition of ideologically diverse parties including an Arab faction, collapsed just over a year after it was formed in a historic move that unseated long-term leader Benjamin Netanyahu from power after 12 years. The motion to dissolve parliament passed with 92 in favour and none opposed, after days of disputes over a new election date. Israel will choose its new leader when the vote is held on 1 November, it has now been decided. Advertisement Mr Lapid, 58, will become the 14th person to hold office in Jerusalem until a new leader is officially announced. He was an architect of the outgoing coalition government - a … [Read more...] about Israel faces fifth election in four years after parliament votes to dissolve itself

Jacob Rees-Mogg tops Conservative poll on next party leader

September 5, 2017 by news.sky.com

During the summer he shrugged off speculation of a Tory leadership bid, but now Jacob Rees-Mogg has emerged as the grassroots favourite to succeed Theresa May. The North East Somerset MP topped a survey of party supporters conducted by ConservativeHome, garnering 23% of the vote. Brexit Secretary David Davis came in second with 15%. However, 19% ticked the "other" box. The 1,309-strong vote is seen as a reliable barometer of grassroots mood, though it can also shift quickly. Mr Rees-Mogg was second favourite in the survey last month. The colourful backbencher and staunch Brexit supporter, known as "the MP for the 18th century" for his unashamedly old-fashioned ways, has enjoyed growing popularity in recent months. Advertisement He has become an unlikely social media darling. And as MPs return to Westminster amid speculation of a ministerial reshuffle, he has been named among rising Tory stars who might be up for promotion. August 13, 2017 by news.sky.com

He has emerged as an unlikely Tory leadership prospect, but Jacob Rees-Mogg has played down claims he is considering running for the party's top job. The North East Somerset MP has experienced a sudden upsurge in popularity since the General Election and he came second in a recent poll of party members on who should succeed Theresa May. He joined Instagram in the run up to June's election and has 40,000 followers - 22,000 more than the Prime Minister. Some see the "young fogey" MP as a right-wing antidote to the popularity of Labour's Jeremy Corbyn. The Old Etonian, who recently announced the birth of his sixth child - Sixtus Dominic Boniface Christopher - is reportedly "sounding out" friends about whether he should go for it, according to The Sunday Times. Advertisement Meanwhile, academic Ted Malloch told the Mail on Sunday that Mr Rees-Mogg had let slip his leadership ambitions during a private lunch.
