Don’t America My Australia

May 16, 2022 by www.theatlantic.com

In late 2021, as Australian cities were seeing anti-lockdown and anti-vaxxer protests against the country’s long-running pandemic restrictions and newly implemented vaccine mandates, Donald Trump Jr. tweeted “Don’t Australia my America.” As someone who has recently moved back to Sydney after covering the Trump presidency for the BBC, I have instead found myself thinking the opposite: Don’t America my Australia . The American variant of democracy is contaminating the body politic of my home. My family left the United States partly to escape its politics, so it was jolting to watch Trump banners that I was more used to seeing in Mississippi and rural Michigan being brandished on the streets of Melbourne. But the Trump paraphernalia, and crowds of Australian protesters that resemble mosh pits of MAGA diehards, have been only a mild form of the sickness. There have been more malign manifestations. Some lawmakers in the state of Victoria who backed tough lockdown measures received … [Read more...] about Don’t America My Australia

How Psychology Explains Voting to Leave the EU

June 29, 2016 by www.theatlantic.com

Britain’s Brexit vote has shocked the political elites of both the U.S. and Europe. The vote wasn’t just about the EU; in fact, polls before the referendum consistently showed that Europe wasn’t top on voters’ lists of concerns . But on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean, large numbers of people feel that the fundamental contracts of capitalism and democracy have been broken. In a capitalist economy, citizens tolerate rich people if they share in the wealth, and in a democracy, they give their consent to be governed if those governing do so in their interest. The Brexit vote was an opportunity for people to tell elites that both promises have been broken. The most effective line of the Leave campaign was “take back control.” It is also Donald Trump’s line. In the weeks leading up to the vote, the consensus among bankers, business leaders, and media figures was, “It will be close, but they won’t do it. In the end people will realize their self-interest, vote with their wallets, and … [Read more...] about How Psychology Explains Voting to Leave the EU

How Clinton’s ‘Basket of Deplorables’ Taught Germany a Lesson

September 27, 2021 by www.theatlantic.com

In the final days of Germany’s election campaign, the center-left Social Democrats appeared to focus their final message to voters on one idea: respect. The message was plastered across the country on vibrant red posters and featured in the closing campaign speech of the party’s candidate for chancellor, Olaf Scholz, who pledged that a Germany under his leadership would recognize the contributions of everyone in society, regardless of their professional or social merit. “We are working very hard on respect. Recognition is a question of how we live together in our societies,” Scholz told me and a small group of reporters following his final campaign rally, in the West German city of Cologne. What mattered, he said, was that Germans all felt a degree of responsibility for the future, and that none thinks “they are better than the others.” The message, though earnest and somewhat anodyne, nevertheless contains an anti-populist pitch aimed at combatting the narrative, both in Germany … [Read more...] about How Clinton’s ‘Basket of Deplorables’ Taught Germany a Lesson

Eddie Jones must now justify why he deserves the job – England look nothing like world beaters

March 19, 2022 by www.telegraph.co.uk

This is the very furnace of French pride in which, if Eddie Jones is to be believed, every doubt and gripe about his methods will be gloriously purged in 19 months’ time. Nothing, you suspect, would give him greater satisfaction than to ridicule his detractors with a World Cup triumph and then escape, as he has always promised, to a Caribbean beach to practise his off-spin. Except this ultimate vindication has never looked so remote. On an intoxicating night here in Paris, as France fed off the fervour of their restless supporters to deliver a first Grand Slam since 2010 , England carried the sorrowful air of spare parts at a wedding. They understood, with a third-place finish sewn up at kick-off, that their sole task was to patch up their wounded self-esteem and restore some fragile hope. It is worth highlighting small mercies: England at least conjured a try, only their second in three Tests, thanks to a delicious piece of skill by Freddie Steward in wrong-footing Romain … [Read more...] about Eddie Jones must now justify why he deserves the job – England look nothing like world beaters
